Former President Tran Duc Luong passed away at 10:51 p.m. on May 20 at his home, at the age of 88.

On the evening of May 21, information from the Central Council for the Protection of Officials' Health said that after a period of illness, despite the dedicated treatment by the Party, the State, a group of professors, doctors, and his family, due to old age and poor health, former President Tran Duc Luong passed away at 10:51 p.m. on May 20 at his home, at the age of 88.

The visitation, memorial service and burial ceremony of former President Tran Duc Luong will be announced later.

Former President Tran Duc Luong was born on May 5, 1937. He was from Pho Khanh commune, Duc Pho district, Quang Ngai province.

He was a member of the Party Central Committee of the 5th (alternate), 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th terms, a member of the Standing Committee of the 8th Politburo , and a member of the 9th Politburo. He was also a National Assembly delegate of the 7th, 8th, and 10th terms.

He served as President from September 1997 to June 2006.

During his work and contributions to the cause of national construction and defense, former President Tran Duc Luong worked for many years in the mining and geology industry; he was a co-author of the research project "Geological map at scale 1/500,000 of Northern Vietnam" (a Soviet-Vietnamese cooperation project in the years 1960 - 1965).

Besides, he is the co-editor of the research project "Vietnam Geological Map at scale 1/500,000", published in 1988, and awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize in 2005...

During his career and contributions, former President Tran Duc Luong was awarded many noble titles such as the Gold Star Order (December 2007).

On February 3, President Luong Cuong awarded the 65-year Party membership badge to former President Tran Duc Luong.

During 65 years in the Party, regardless of his position, former President Tran Duc Luong always upheld the pioneering and exemplary nature of a Party member, was loyal to the Party and the Fatherland, wholeheartedly served the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation, fulfilled the assigned responsibilities, and was worthy of the trust of the Party, the State and the people.

Former President Tran Duc Luong was the General Director of the General Department of Geology (later the General Department of Mining and Geology), Secretary of the Party Committee of the General Department; Deputy Director and then Director of the National Assembly's Committee on Science and Technology...

From 1987 to August 1992, he was Vice Chairman of the Council of Ministers and Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance. From September 1992 to August 1997, he was Deputy Prime Minister.

From September 1997 to June 2006, he was President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. In July 2006, he retired.
