Summer Guide for Kids

Every summer, parents are both the ones who arrange time for their children and the ones who silently guide them to meaningful childhood days. In An Giang, many families are proactively creating their own summer vacations for their children, from learning skills, sports, technology to returning to their homeland, nature and memories.

Free swimming classes at Long Xuyen swimming pool attract many children to participate, a practical activity to help train physical fitness and prevent drowning.

Putting aside a year of hard work, summer is a precious time for students to rest, develop physically and mentally, and form essential skills. Instead of waiting for the general program, parents in Long Xuyen City are planning their own vacations according to their family circumstances andeducational orientation. Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh (a teacher at a secondary school in Long Xuyen City) chose to take her child to her maternal hometown for the entire 3 summer months. Ms. Linh shared: "Going back to the countryside is an opportunity for children to be close to their grandparents, play childhood games, take care of the garden, and bathe in the river. These things are not available in the city." For Ms. Linh, summer vacation does not need to be too elaborate, as long as children are free to explore their familiar living environment, it is also very valuable.

In Binh Khanh ward, Mr. Nguyen Van Thang also took his child back to his hometown, but combined it with a study and training plan in Long Xuyen city. “At the beginning of summer, my child goes to his grandparents' house to relax. After that, he returns to the city to participate in swimming, soccer, cycling... to stay healthy and learn life skills. The family also encourages the child to study on his own and help with housework.” Many parents also choose modern classes to help their children access technology and practice thinking. The Information Technology Center, An Giang University organizes many classes, such as: Basic programming, graphic design, office information technology... for primary and secondary school students.

In addition to the formal education system, some playgrounds in the city also cleverly incorporate learning and creativity into games. At the Baby and Friends playground (Coopmart Long Xuyen supermarket), since the end of May, a Robotics model has been deployed for children from 6 years old. Children are instructed to assemble robots that can move using batteries. Ms. Pham Thi My Tien (Manager of the Baby and Friends Skill Development Play Company Limited) said: “This activity helps children practice patience, flexibility and limit the time spent using electronic devices. Each child participates in turns, with specific instructions, appropriate to their age.”

For parents who care about safety and life skills, the free swimming class at Long Xuyen swimming pool is a priority choice. This activity is organized by the Center for Culture, Sports and Broadcasting of Long Xuyen City, the classes are for children aged 6-12 from poor, near-poor and disadvantaged households. Each class lasts 12 sessions, with specialized teachers instructing and closely supervised by rescuers. Mr. Truong Minh Tu (rescue worker) shared: "Children will learn basic swimming skills to prevent drowning. After mastering the techniques, they can swim in deep water areas."

Currently, the center is in the process of transferring to the commune level according to the merger project, so it has not organized any other summer activities besides swimming classes. However, the organizing team still tries to maintain the classes throughout the 3 summer months, to ensure that children have a safe and practical place to practice.

From an insider’s perspective, Danh Dang Khoa (4A grade student, Le Loi Primary School, My Binh Ward) shared: “I like to go out and run around with my friends. When studying, I like computer science because it’s fun, but if I had a choice, I would still choose to play. I also like reading comics and detective stories.” Khoa’s interests reflect the common psychology of many primary school students: Summer is the time to be free and comfortable to explore things beyond books.

From an orientation perspective, Plan 341/KH-BCĐ.SHH, issued by the Summer Activities Steering Committee (Provincial People's Committee), shows that in 2025, the locality will still implement many contents: Children's summer camp, swimming promotion, life skills competition, cultural exchange activities... However, parents are tending to personalize their vacations, flexibly combining rest, study and skill training depending on family conditions.

Each child is an individual, each family is a different environment. When parents proactively organize the summer, the learning and living atmosphere is no longer constrained by stereotypes. One child goes to the countryside to experience nature, another learns more technology skills, or another spends time at the pool, all are living according to their needs and abilities.
