According to the elders in Cau Hoan village, Thien Dong hamlet, Dien Sanh commune, in the past, this land had a large lake and next to it was a village pagoda, so people used to call it Bau Chua area. This place has marked many historical events of our army and people in the two resistance wars against the French and American invaders. During the years of resistance against the Americans, Bau Chua area, Cau Hoan village was the operating area of guerrilla forces and local troops, thanks to the hidden terrain with dense forests and vast trees. Therefore, fierce battles between us and the enemy took place here; many officers and soldiers of army and guerrilla units fell, including 66 officers and soldiers of Regiment 6 who heroically sacrificed themselves.

“From February 19-28, 1966, after 9 days and nights of fierce fighting at Bau Chua, 66 officers and soldiers of Regiment 6 fell. Afterwards, they were buried by the villagers of Cau Hoan right at the place of their sacrifice. Since then, to commemorate the martyrs, the villagers of Cau Hoan, especially households in the Bau Chua area, have chosen the 8th day of the 2nd lunar month every year as a day of remembrance and gratitude. The people here not only visit and burn incense regularly but also organize a large-scale and respectful memorial service for the martyrs, at the same time educating their children about the tradition of remembering the source of the water they drink,” Deputy Head of the National Veterans Liaison Committee of Regiment 6 - Tri Thien Military Region Nguyen Duc Dung sadly recounted.
Not only did the villagers of Cau Hoan bury the martyrs solemnly, they also set up a place to worship the martyrs right in the grounds of an ancient temple in the area. That ancient temple was later repaired and upgraded by the government, local people and the National Veterans Liaison Committee of Regiment 6. “In the past, when the country was not yet completely unified, every February 8th of the lunar calendar, people in Bau Chua area, Thanh hamlet, prepared a small tray of food for each household to burn incense and hold a memorial service. It was not until 1980, after the country was unified, that people met and agreed to join hands to contribute money and send at least one person from each household to organize a common memorial service instead of each household organizing it individually. Bau Chua area, Thanh hamlet has 55 households, everyone is responsible and dedicated to organizing the memorial service for the martyrs who sacrificed their lives on their homeland. Depending on the scale, large or small, Thanh hamlet chief will meet with the people and propose a collection level of 100,000 to 200,000 VND/household/memorial. They even mobilize children far from home to send back contributions, making the memorial service always solemn and cozy,” said Thanh hamlet chief, Cau Hoan village, Dang Ba Yen.

Currently, in Bau Chua area, Thanh hamlet has a church and a memorial stele for 66 martyrs of Regiment 6 - Tri Thien Military Region. These places are always protected, cared for, and regularly burned incense by the local government and especially the people of Thanh hamlet. "We always pay attention to coordinating the management, protection, landscape care, and beautification of the grounds at the church and memorial stele. Every month, we organize visits and burn incense. The good news is that the younger generation is increasingly aware of the meaning of this work of gratitude and enthusiastically responds," said Le Minh Khue, Deputy Head of Thanh hamlet, Cau Hoan village.
Nearly 60 years have passed, but the meaningful actions above confirm that the government and people of Dien Sanh commune are not indifferent to those who sacrificed their lives on their homeland. Now, the memorial stele and martyrs’ church of Regiment 6 have become a “red address” to educate revolutionary traditions, patriotism, and the morality of “remembering the source of water when drinking” for future generations.
