On the evening of September 9 at Viet Tri Stadium, U23 Vietnam defeated U23 Yemen to win a ticket to the 2026 AFC U23 Championship finals as the top team in Group C. Coach Kim Sang-sik and his team had 9 absolute points after 3 matches.
Mrs. Trinh Thi Hanh - midfielder Le Van Thuan's mother - accompanied her son in all 3 matches. According to Mrs. Hanh, the whole family of 12 people traveled 5 hours from Thanh Hoa to Phu Tho to accompany Van Thuan and U23 Vietnam. She could not hide her emotions when her son became more and more mature, played steadily and contributed 1 goal for U23 Vietnam in this tournament.
“I am very happy and pleased that Van Thuan is growing up day by day. My son has contributed 1 goal to U23 Vietnam. After each match, Thuan calls home, the whole family also encourages him to make efforts and try for the team. Hopefully, Thuan will still be given opportunities by coach Kim Sang-sik in the next tournaments, including the SEA Games and the U23 Asian finals,” said Ms. Trinh Thi Hanh, Van Thuan’s mother, about her son.
She continued: “I also hope that Thuan and his teammates will become more mature and more courageous to bring glory to the Fatherland. I wish you all to always maintain your enthusiasm and be successful in every tournament.”

Also present in the stands to support U23 Vietnam, Mrs. Khuat Thi Lan, the aunt of captain Khuat Van Khang, shed tears when the final whistle blew. She shared: “I am very happy and proud to see U23 Vietnam compete and win a ticket to the final round. I am also proud that my grandchild has the opportunity to contribute to the Vietnamese national teams.”
Like Van Thuan's mother, Ms. Lan hopes that the young players will not rest on their laurels: "I hope Van Khang and the whole team maintain their form, grow more and more, and live up to the trust and expectations of Coach Kim and the fans in the next tournaments. Everyone in the family will always follow and support Van Khang and the whole team."
After the 2026 AFC U23 qualifiers, the players will return to their home clubs. The team will regroup in October to prepare for the SEA Games and the U23 finals right after that.
Coach Kim Sang-sik emphasized: “After finishing 3 matches, I have drawn some lessons. I talked to the players and advised them to be calm in the penalty area and focus more. When I returned to the club, I reminded them to improve everything to aim for the SEA Games at the end of the year.”
