The most anticipated iPhone 17 model may disappoint

In addition to the impressive ultra-thin design, the iPhone 17 Air is likely to have fewer upgrades than the regular version, and also suffers from major performance limitations.

Apple’s biggest fall event will take place on September 9, where it will unveil its latest lineup of products. In addition to the standard and Pro iPhones, a special device will also be added to the lineup this time.

The iPhone 17 Air is said by many news sites to be the thinnest iPhone ever, competing with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge. Apple positions the 17 Air as higher than the standard version but more affordable than the Pro models. However, this phone model is likely to not make a good impression as the brand promotes it.

Despite its superior thin and light design, the iPhone 17 Air will have to compromise on battery life and camera quality. According to Bloomberg , these are the two most important needs of users today. Therefore, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, which are not as widely promoted, become more practical choices.

To maintain the thinness, Apple is said to make hardware trade-offs. Specifically, the iPhone 17 Air may only be equipped with a wide-angle camera similar to the iPhone 16E model, one lens less than the basic iPhone line.

The iPhone 17 Air may have some clever cropping from the sensor to simulate a 2x zoom effect. But in everyday use, the ultra-wide camera will be useful for close-up shots of things like food or flowers, and a single camera may not be able to provide the same sharpness.

The second downside to a thinner phone is that the battery will likely be smaller. According to some reports, the iPhone 17 Air will likely use a silicon-anode battery to extend battery life, with a higher density that should increase “real capacity” by about 15% to 20%.

There are also rumors that the Adaptive Power feature on iOS 26 will help adjust iPhone performance based on usage habits to save battery. However, many users have expressed concerns about battery life and the inconvenience of having to carry a spare charger.

The phone's extreme thinness has also unintentionally become a concern for users. Cnet reporter Nicole Lee tried the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge and said that the thinness gave her a feeling of being too fragile, like it was about to break in half, making her uncomfortable to use.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Air is only about 5.5mm thick. And no matter how thin it is, users will still attach a case to it, reducing the phone's thinness advantage.

The last thing is the price of the product. The iPhone 17 Air will be priced between the regular iPhone 17 and the 17 Pro, around $900-$1,099 according to some rumors.

Apart from the ultra-thin design, the iPhone 17 Air does not have many outstanding features compared to the regular line. While the iPhone 17 Pro will be equipped with the A19 Pro chip, significantly improving battery life, video recording capabilities, and the telephoto lens will switch from a 12 megapixel sensor to 48 megapixels, if the price difference is not too much, it will be a more suitable choice.
