Market research firm IDC has raised its global forecast for smartphone shipments in 2025 to 1.24 billion units, up from a 0.6% increase in its previous forecast in May.
The iPhone is said to be the main driver behind this increase, with the brand now expected to grow by 3.9% in 2025. The IDC report also highlighted that without Apple, the global smartphone market would be flat or in decline.
The iPhone's resilience contrasts with weakening Android sales, especially in the Chinese market.
IDC said that trade-in programs, installment plans and user loyalty have helped Apple maintain upgrades, as many users are holding onto their phones for four years or more.
Additionally, the report said most iPhone customers are sticking with the iOS operating system, a factor that has helped Apple expand its market share even as other manufacturers pursue lower-cost volume.
For the first time in three years, Apple plans to make major changes to its iPhone designs, according to Bloomberg . While its competitors are shifting their focus to AI, Apple will leave its comfort zone and refresh its flagship phone line.
The first change will come in September, when the iPhone 17 Air will replace the 16 Plus. This product follows the strategy of the MacBook Air laptop line that Apple first applied in 2008, which is thinner, lighter and easier to market immediately.
