The Security Council will meet today on Israel's attack on Iran.

(CLO) The United Nations Security Council will meet on Monday (October 28) to discuss Israel's attack on Iran, according to an announcement from Switzerland, which holds the role of Council President on Sunday.

The Swiss mission to the United Nations said the meeting was requested by Iran with the support of Algeria, China and Russia.

“The Israeli regime’s actions pose a serious threat to international peace and security, and further destabilize an already fragile region,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi wrote in a letter to the 15-member council on Saturday.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran, in accordance with the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter and international law, reserves the legitimate and justifiable right to respond to these criminal attacks at the appropriate time," he added.

Dozens of Israeli warplanes carried out three pre-dawn airstrikes on Saturday against missile factories and other facilities near Tehran and in western Iran, the Israeli military said. The strikes were in retaliation for an Iranian attack on Oct. 1 that fired about 200 ballistic missiles, and Israel warned its adversaries not to retaliate.

Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, dismissed Iran's complaint, calling it "absurd" that Israel violated international law. "As we have repeatedly stated, we have the right and duty to defend ourselves and will use all available means to protect Israeli citizens," Danon said in a statement on Sunday.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on "all parties to cease military actions, including in Gaza and Lebanon, make every effort to prevent a full-scale regional war and return to the path of diplomacy," his spokesman said in a statement on Saturday.
