The decision to fire Bayer Leverkusen was made on the afternoon of September 1, after a disappointing 3-3 draw against Werder Bremen in round 2 of the Bundesliga.
Despite leading 3-1 and having an extra man for the final 30 minutes, Ten Hag's side were left to wonder if they would equalise, having previously suffered a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Hoffenheim in their opening game of the season.
In a recent statement, the Dutch strategist said he was completely surprised by this decision. "Saying goodbye to a coach after only two matches in the national championship is unprecedented," he shared.
Ten Hag stressed that building a new team takes time and patience, especially given that many key players left the club this past summer.
"A new coach needs time to develop his vision, set standards and put his stamp on the team's style of play," said Ten Hag.
The Dutch coach also expressed his disappointment at not receiving enough trust from the board. He shared: "I started the job with all my faith and energy, but unfortunately the board was not willing to give me enough time and trust. I have the feeling that this relationship has never been built on mutual trust."
Ten Hag recalled past successes, insisting that the teams that believed in him and gave him a chance have all reaped the rewards.
At the end of the statement, the former Leverkusen coach thanked the team's fans for their sincerity and enthusiasm, and wished the team and coaching staff every success in the rest of the season.
Previously, German media continuously reported on the increasing pressure on coach Ten Hag in the past two weeks. According to these sources, the main reason for the quick decision to fire him was that he had lost the support of the players and the board was not satisfied with his tactical choices.
