According to the admission information of universities, the advantage of candidates depends on the exam subjects, in previous years it was the combination. Because the Ministry of Education and Training has removed the regulation on the number of combinations for admission, each combination only requires at least 3 subjects, of which 1 is compulsory, Math or Literature.
Candidates choosing to take the Foreign Language exam is the most beneficial. Because most of the school combinations have a foreign language in addition to one of the two compulsory subjects, Math or Literature. For example, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance uses a subject combination divided into 2 groups. The main subjects of the combination are Literature and English. This year, the economic, foreign language, and even medical and pharmaceutical majors also prioritize admissions combinations with foreign languages. Hanoi Medical University and Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy use the B08 combination (Math, Biology, English) in addition to the traditional B00 combination (Math, Chemistry, Biology).
In 2025, the first batch of candidates studying under the 2018 generaleducation program will take the high school graduation exam. According to regulations, candidates will take 2 compulsory subjects: Math, Literature and 2 elective subjects out of 9 subjects, including: Foreign Language, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, and Technology.
With the above number of subjects and selection methods, there will be over 90 combination codes that can be used for university admission. To adapt to the innovation in the number of subjects and exam formats, many universities have adjusted the admission combination. Hanoi University of Science and Technology has added an admission combination called K01 (Math, Literature combined with 1 of 4 subjects: Physics/Chemistry, Biology/IT). With this combination, when calculating the score, Math is multiplied by a coefficient of 3, Literature is multiplied by a coefficient of 1, and the remaining subjects are multiplied by a coefficient of 2.
Hanoi University of Industry added new groups including A0C (Math, Physics, Technology), A0T (Math, Physics, Information Technology), B0C (Math, Chemistry, Technology), D0C (Math, English, Technology), D0G (Math, English, Economic Education and Law).
This year, in addition to the 4 traditional groups A00 (Math, Physics, Chemistry), A01 (Math, Physics, English), D01 (Math, Literature, English), B00 (Math, Chemistry, Biology), the University of Technology (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) has 2 more groups with IT subjects: Math, English, IT and Math, Physics, IT.

Dr. Vo Thanh Hai, Vice President of Duy Tan University, shared that candidates registering for university admission on the system of the Ministry of Education and Training do not need to register for admission methods and subject combinations. The task of higher education institutions is to announce the admission methods and subject combinations, then coordinate with the Ministry to organize virtual filtering and admission. In addition, all admission methods are converted to a common score scale according to the conversion formula. Thus, the number of combinations expands opportunities for candidates. The important issue is that the subject combination must ensure that there is a subject of basic knowledge of the admission industry in addition to one of the two compulsory subjects: Math and Literature.
Dr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Vice Principal of Hanoi University, shared that increasing the admission combination will increase the opportunity for candidates to choose a major. For example, the school's Information Technology major this year has an additional combination of Math - Informatics - English in addition to the two traditional combinations (Math - Literature - English, Math - Physics - English), candidates who choose to take the Informatics exam will have the opportunity to register for admission. Reducing 2 exam subjects will reduce the pressure on candidates, specifically reducing 1 exam session, only 3 exams instead of 4 as before, while the opportunity to choose a major and school will increase, so it will be beneficial for candidates taking the high school graduation exam this year.
Idol Festival but not yet selected
This weekend, Hanoi University of Science and Technology organized a festival to welcome talented Idols. This is an annual program when the admission season begins. In previous years, the program was organized to welcome candidates who were admitted early through the talent selection method. This year, the Ministry of Education and Training does not allow early selection, the program becomes an interview and consultation round of the school for candidates participating in this selection method.
Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Duy Hai, Head of Admissions and Career Guidance Department, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, shared that the school's talent selection method attracts about 5,000 candidates. This year, through the application round, the number of candidates reached about 4,500.
This admission method has 3 subjects: direct admission according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training (subject 1); subject 2 is candidates participating in admission combined with international competency assessment certificates (SAT, ACT) and subject 3, candidates applying for admission combined with interviews.
Mr. Hai said that about 2,000 candidates in category 3 registered for online interviews because their homes were far away; 1,000 candidates participated in direct interviews at the Idol festival. About 1,500 candidates in categories 1 and 2 came to learn more information, receive advice, and ask questions about how to convert admission scores.
This year, the number of candidates in category 2 has increased dramatically. Mr. Vu Duy Hai predicted that due to the impact of the policy applied to international students in the US, candidates will choose to apply to Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
Candidates participating in the talent selection method, only subject 1 is sure to be admitted because of direct admission. Subject 2 and subject 3 must wait after virtual filtering by the Ministry of Education and Training.
Mr. Hai advised candidates when participating in the admission methods of the schools this year, even though they are not allowed to consider early admission, the regulations of each method require them to be implemented. Each method will have its own regulations on the time to update data information, requirements, etc. If they miss it, candidates will no longer have the opportunity to consider that method even if they register their wishes in the Ministry of Education and Training system in July.
Deputy Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son shared that the changes in this year's admissions are only technical adjustments. As in previous years, students only need to focus on doing well in the high school graduation exam, and enter their wishes according to the system's instructions. The remaining work will be handled by the schools and the general admissions system.
