Fake flowers but look real

Looking at the flowers created by Nhi’s skillful hands, it is hard to believe that they are fake flowers. And to make a complete, natural flower, Nhi said that it takes many steps, including: mixing colors, rolling the soil, taking off the petals and leaves, creating veins, shaping, assembling the petals and coloring.

She said: “The most difficult step is color matching because it requires careful observation, color sensitivity, and aesthetic taste so that the flowers, although fake, still look natural and lifelike.”

Therefore, according to Ms. Nhi, to create lifelike flowers, the maker needs to have keen observation, patience, meticulousness, aesthetic sense and most importantly, feel the "soul" of the flower.

In the process of pursuing her passion for making clay flowers, Nhi has tried many different types of flowers, such as lotus, water lily, jasmine, rose, chrysanthemum, orchid, hydrangea... but for her, lotus is always the biggest challenge. "Because it not only requires meticulousness but also has to express the soul of this flower, which is the elegant and pure beauty", Nhi said.

Therefore, there are some types of flowers that only take Nhi a few hours to complete, but there are also more complicated flower designs that take several days to complete.

In addition to clay flowers, Nhi also makes edible sugar flowers. “Sugar flowers are an interesting challenge because they are fragile, breakable, and sensitive to humidity and temperature. The techniques for both sugar flowers and clay flowers are basically the same, but sugar flowers require much more delicacy and gentleness, especially when assembling the petals and preserving them,” she said.

Looking at the flower designs that Nhi made, one would think that she had been trained and guided properly, but this is the result of a process of self-study and exploration. “Back then, due to difficult circumstances, I did not have the opportunity to go to school, so I mainly self-studied online and then practiced on my own. I love this job because it combines both my passion for crafts and my love for nature and flowers. When I make flowers, I feel very happy, peaceful and able to slow down my life,” Nhi confided.

10 years pursuing passion

Having been involved in making clay flowers for 10 years now, talking about the opportunity to come to this path, Ms. Nhi shared: “When I first graduated, I worked as an accountant for about three months, but quickly realized that it was not the path for me. After that, I wanted to try my hand at handicrafts, something that had been with me since I was a child. And thanks to a friend's suggestion, I learned about clay flowers, from there I started to explore and the more I did, the more passionate I became.”

When she first pursued her passion for making clay flowers, Nhi encountered many difficulties due to lack of experience, limited capital and having to struggle to learn on her own. Later, when she became more proficient, she said she had to face the challenge of maintaining her passion, not repeating herself but always being creative and innovating.

According to Ms. Nhi, the clay flowers she makes can be used for 5-10 years if well preserved, while sugar flowers can be kept for several months, but these are often used to decorate cakes and have more spiritual meaning.

“Prices range from a few hundred thousand to tens of millions of dong, depending on the type of flower, size, and complexity. My customers are flower lovers, art lovers, bakers, and passionate students who want to conquer this subject,” she said.

For Nhi, making clay flowers is not only a passion and income, but also a meaningful life when she shares and connects with people who share the same passion. And when the products she makes are well received by everyone, she feels extremely happy and grateful. "Every compliment is like adding energy, making me want to learn, create and spread this art to more people," she said.
