Warning signs of a mini-stroke that should not be ignored

There are different types of strokes, the most common of which are hemorrhagic strokes and ischemic strokes. Mini-strokes have similar symptoms to real strokes but do not last as long, according to the health website Medical News Today (UK).

A mini-stroke can still cause severe headaches and other symptoms similar to a real stroke.

Mini-strokes do not cause lasting brain damage. However, they are a warning sign that a major stroke is imminent.

An ischemic stroke occurs when a blood vessel leading to the brain is blocked, resulting in a severe reduction or complete interruption of blood flow to the brain. Meanwhile, a mini-stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is temporarily reduced for a short period of time.

This results in a mini-stroke that has similar symptoms to a stroke but does not cause permanent brain damage. This is because blood flow is restored quickly and long-term damage to brain cells is avoided. Mini-strokes usually last only a few minutes or hours. Most people recover within 24 hours.

The symptoms of a mini-stroke are similar to those of a real stroke, including sudden numbness and weakness on one side of the body, dizziness, loss of balance, severe headache, blurred vision, and other symptoms. However, these symptoms disappear quickly, so it is easy for the patient to be subjective.

Suspected mini-stroke, what to do?

When a mini-stroke is suspected, the patient needs to be taken to the hospital as soon as possible. Doctors will take measures to restore the patient's health and prevent a real stroke from occurring.

Patients will be prescribed antiplatelet drugs, which prevent platelets from sticking together to form blood clots. Blood clots and atherosclerotic plaques are the main causes of blockages in blood vessels in the brain and lead to stroke.

Depending on the case, the doctor may combine anticoagulants, blood thinners, and cholesterol-lowering drugs. Patients also need to control blood pressure, eat a healthy diet, quit drinking and smoking, and exercise regularly, according to Medical News Today.
