Oceans may 'stop forgiving'

The ocean has been tolerant of humans for centuries, sheltering civilizations, feeding billions of people, regulating the climate, and creating international trade corridors. But now that “blue heart” is tired – pollution, destructive fishing… and human indifference are pushing the ocean to its limits.

The Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) (June 9-13) in Nice (France) with the theme "Accelerating action and mobilizing all stakeholders to conserve and sustainably use the ocean" demonstrated global efforts in the context that many Sustainable Development Goal No. 14 - Life below Water (SDG14) has been significantly delayed and is at risk of not being completed on time.

The activities of UNOC3 are more than just a Conference - they are a call to action for all humanity. And in this forum, Vietnam has raised a strong voice from a developing, but responsible country.

Representing Vietnam and ASEAN countries, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh left a clear mark, a vision and a commitment. At the Conference, the Head of Government affirmed that ASEAN - "the heart of a maritime Asia", converges trade and cultural flows and cooperation over many centuries.

In particular, the East Sea is the most strategically important sea in the world , with vital shipping routes, a rich marine ecosystem, and is the fulcrum for the livelihoods, cultural identity and security of hundreds of millions of people.

Before the event in Nice, French Ambassador to Vietnam Olivier Brochet also shared that the three pillars of Ocean - Climate - Biodiversity are like a tripod. Any leg of the tripod that is shaken will affect all of humanity.

The ocean contains rich natural resources, nourishes people, and is also a space to connect continents. Therefore, what the world is facing regarding safety, territorial sovereignty, and sustainable development of the ocean is always a matter of survival.

But “the ocean is seriously ill”, as the host country, France calls for a common awareness of the dangers threatening the ocean, and timely and practical actions before it is too late. Appreciating Vietnam’s voice, France also hopes that other countries will raise their voices so that the international community can hear.

For Vietnam, the commitment of the head of government is not just words. Vietnam has put itself in the position of a country “responsible for the future of the planet”. Vietnam cannot save the ocean alone. But Vietnam can and is becoming a responsible part of the global effort. It shows that the ocean - the green treasure of humanity - can be revived, if people are determined enough.

And the commitment from Nice is a message of action - there is no time for hesitation, no room for short-sighted calculations. Although the ocean is resilient and forgiving - we cannot continue to abuse nature's immense forgiveness... Because when the ocean "stops forgiving", we will have nowhere to run.
