Saving the life of a 20-year-old man who had cardiac arrest while working out at the gym

According to the medical records, on July 29, while working out at the gym, the young man suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness. The gym staff immediately performed CPR and called 115. About 15 minutes later, the emergency team arrived, continued CPR and transferred the patient to the Emergency Department, E Hospital in a deep coma with dilated pupils.

Immediately, doctors performed endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, sedatives and anti-cerebral edema drugs for the patient.

A male patient with cardiac arrest is being examined by doctors at E Hospital.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Ly, Department of Internal Medicine Intensive Care and Anti-Poison, said: Because the patient was in a coma after cardiac arrest, doctors applied the command hypothermia technique - an intensive resuscitation measure to protect the brain. After 3 days of treatment, the patient gradually regained consciousness, breathed on her own, was weaned off vasopressors and had the endotracheal tube removed.

It is expected that in the near future, the patient will be thoroughly examined for potential risk factors such as cardiovascular, neurological, metabolic, etc. and may be implanted with an automatic defibrillator (ICD) to prevent the risk of sudden death before discharge.

Doctors warn that sudden cardiac arrest can occur at any age or gender. Exercise is necessary, but it must be appropriate to each person's physical condition and health, and avoid overtraining. In particular, if you have symptoms such as chest pain lasting more than 10-15 minutes, feeling of having stopped breathing, etc., you need to seek emergency care immediately to avoid unfortunate consequences.
