Handshake between Vietnamese and international stars in cinema

In recent years, Vietnamese cinema has witnessed an increasing number of international cooperation projects. Three notable works in recent times: “Mang me di bo”, “Tay anh gi mot sao”, “Co dau ma” are clear evidence of this trend, at the same time showing both opportunities and challenges for Vietnamese artists on the journey of integration.

When Vietnamese stars step out of their "comfort zone"

In “Bringing Mother Away”, the combination of Vietnamese actors such as Tuan Tran and Hong Dao with Korean faces has made the film receive attention since its announcement. Pairing with international co-stars forces Vietnamese actors to quickly adapt to a more disciplined and professional working style.

When it premiered, the project “Take Me Away” was a big hit at the box office. The film has grossed 171 billion VND and is one of the most successful Vietnamese-Korean projects at the moment.

Riding on the success, Korean cinema continues to cooperate with Vietnam through the film “Tay anh gi mot sao”. In this project, Lee Kwang Soo collaborates with Vietnamese actor Hoang Ha. The project will not be released until October, however, information surrounding the Korean and Vietnamese stars has made the audience pay attention and look forward to it.

In the horror genre, “Ghost Bride” brings Vietnamese artists together with Thai actors - a country with a strong reputation for horror films. This not only helps the film easily penetrate the Thai market but also allows Vietnamese actors to learn how to express emotions typical of this genre. In this project, Rima Thanh Vy has a good performance with actor JJ Krissanapoom. Working with a Thai star for the first time, the Vietnamese actress said she learned a lot of experience and filmmaking methods from an international crew.

Great opportunity to learn, promote and reach out

When working with international stars, Vietnamese artists have the opportunity to rub shoulders and improve their skills. They learn how to control their acting, work on time, and prepare carefully before each scene. These are the standards of the film industry that the domestic environment sometimes does not pay attention to.

The participation of international actors also helps Vietnamese films reach global audiences more easily. Korean audiences are interested in “Tay anh gi mot sao” because of the participation of their country’s stars, while “Co dau ma” is easily released in Southeast Asian countries. This is an advantage for Vietnamese films in general and domestic actors in particular to not only stay in the domestic film market but also reach out to the region.

In addition, the image of Vietnamese actors standing next to international stars is also an effective way to promote Vietnamese culture, style and personality. They become "soft ambassadors" to bring the image of Vietnam to the world .

Challenges for many reasons

Although there are many advantages, there are also many difficulties. Acting with famous international stars creates invisible pressure. Audiences often compare the acting of the two sides. If Vietnamese artists are not capable enough, they can easily be "overshadowed" on screen, even considered "supporting actors in their own home field".

In addition, the difference in acting methods sometimes creates a sense of awkwardness in some scenes. This is a challenge for the director to reconcile and for the actors to learn to adapt.

Despite many obstacles, the trend of international cooperation in actors and production is an opportunity for Vietnamese cinema to break through. If “The Ghost Bride” helps Vietnamese artists learn from their Southeast Asian co-stars, “Bringing Mother to the Rescue” and “Tay Anh Giu Mot Sao” show that Vietnam can become a destination for film cooperation with countries with a more developed film history such as Korea.

From the three international co-productions of Vietnam that have been and are about to be released, it can be seen that Vietnamese actors sharing the same frame with international stars is both an opportunity to improve their level and a challenge for their mettle. If they overcome language barriers, comparisons and cultural differences, they will become a new generation of artists who will bring Vietnamese cinema closer to the world cinema map.
