GPT-5, the latest version of OpenAI's large language model, is being hailed by experts as a superior search engine, with the ability to filter information by itself with the "GPT-5 Thinking" feature.
Expert Simon Willison, co-founder of Django - one of the most popular web frameworks in the world , shared his amazing experiences using GPT-5. He likened this tool to a personal "research assistant" thanks to its ability to search and synthesize information quickly and surprisingly accurately.
In a blog post titled “GPT-5 Thinking is Surprisingly Good at Searching,” Willison describes the new AI technology as a search assistant that goes beyond a typical chatbot.
He says GPT-5 has completely changed the way he accesses information, being able to perform complex search tasks quickly and yielding better results than manual searches in the same amount of time.
To prove his point, Simon Willison gave several real-life examples. He recounted how he had to research the history of the “bouncing conveyor belts” at Heathrow Airport, simply by giving GPT-5 the task instead of searching for it himself. The tool quickly compiled detailed and accurate information.

Similarly, GPT-5 also excelled when asked to identify a building in a blurry photo or clarify whether the coffee chain Starbucks sells “cake pops” in the UK.
The most notable example was when Willison asked GPT-5 to study the history of caves at Exeter harbor, a task that required extensive research. The AI tool did a huge amount of work, searching and synthesizing information from many sources.
The results are not just simple answers, but also include interesting historical details and even suggest a pre-written email to contact local researchers. Willison said this ability is useful, not only for satisfying curiosity but also for important work that requires accuracy and speed.
Along with the praise for its incredible capabilities, the launch of GPT-5 also received a lot of criticism from the user community. Immediately after GPT-5 was announced, many people expressed disappointment and said that this new model was "less intelligent" or "less creative" than GPT-4o. A series of users complained that GPT-5 had a dry "personality" and lacked the warmth and personality of previous models.
Discontent also grew when OpenAI removed or hid older models. In response to the outcry, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the problems and pledged to make adjustments. The company has since restored access to some older models for paying users and tweaked GPT-5’s “personality” to make it more user-friendly.
