In late August 2025, we had the opportunity to work in Van Linh commune, right in the custard apple harvest season. Walking along Route DH 88, we could easily see people and traders busily transporting and purchasing custard apples. However, according to our observations, Route DH 88 is now showing many signs of serious degradation, many sections of the road surface are heavily peeled, bumpy and potholed, making it difficult to travel and transport custard apples.
Ms. Quach Thi Nhung ( Hanoi city), a custard apple buyer, said: During the custard apple harvest season, I go to Van Linh commune almost every day to buy custard apples. What I fear most is traveling on the degraded road. Every time the car passes through peeling roads, many potholes, even many sections have 10 to 20 cm deep puddles like traps waiting for the wheels to fall into, it makes me very nervous. Just being careless can easily cause an accident or damage the car.
Not only traders who buy custard apples, but also local people who often have to travel on this route cannot help but frown when mentioning the road. Ms. Hoang Thi Tue, Lang Thuong village, Van Linh commune said: In recent years, the degraded road has greatly affected people's travel. When traveling on severely damaged roads, we have to avoid potholes and other vehicles, which poses many potential traffic safety risks. Not only that, when the rainy season comes, many sections of the road on Route 88 are flooded, cutting off some villages, forcing us to go to the fields, gardens or take care of custard apples in neighboring villages, having to take a detour, 5 to 7 km further, which takes a lot of time and effort. I hope the road will soon be repaired and upgraded so that people can travel more conveniently and safely.
The desire to upgrade and renovate Highway 88 is not only for Ms. Tue herself but also for all the people of Van Linh commune as well as those who often travel on the road. Mr. Nguyen Van Toan, Vice Chairman of Van Linh Commune People's Committee, said: Highway 88 starts at Km 164+100 of National Highway 279 and ends at the cultural house of Nam Lan 2 village, with a length of 15 km. This is considered the "bloodline" passing through the commune center, serving the travel and trading needs of people in the commune as well as neighboring communes. However, because the road has been put into use for nearly 20 years (since 2006), many sections on the route have degraded. Along with that, the traffic volume is increasing day by day, combined with the rather narrow road, making it even more difficult to participate in traffic. In particular, when it rains heavily, some sections on the route are often flooded. Faced with the above reality, at village meetings and voter contacts, people have repeatedly expressed their opinions and the commune government has also proactively proposed to the provincial working group to pay attention and allocate resources to renovate and upgrade the road during inspections of the implementation of socio -economic development tasks in the commune; at the same time, recommend the Provincial People's Committee, the Department of Construction, and the Department of Finance to allocate funds to renovate and upgrade the road, meeting the needs and aspirations of the people.
Through research, we learned that the maintenance and repair of Route 88 is being undertaken by Lang Son Traffic Construction and Management Joint Stock Company. Faced with the current state of the degraded road, the unit has conducted a survey and implemented solutions to fix it. Mr. Vi Van Dan, Director of Lang Son Traffic Construction and Management Joint Stock Company, said: The project was completed and put into operation a long time ago. In addition, in recent years, the rainy weather has caused the already degraded roadbed and surface to deteriorate even faster. To overcome this, the unit still carries out maintenance and repair work on the road every year. However, with limited funding, at 28 million VND/km/year, the unit can only repair some severely damaged areas, and at the same time dredge, clear drainage ditches, clear visibility, clean markers, signs, etc. To fundamentally resolve and effectively remedy the deterioration of the road, the unit has reported to the Department of Construction and currently the Department of Construction has reported and advised the Provincial People's Committee on the plan to repair this road. Accordingly, in 2026, the road will be allocated capital to repair, upgrade, and ensure traffic safety on the route.
Built and put into use for nearly 20 years, Highway 88 has long been not only a road connecting villages and communes, facilitating people's travel, but also plays an important role in the socio-economic development of Van Linh people. Therefore, we hope that all levels and sectors will soon implement a plan to renovate and upgrade Highway 88 to connect and promote trade, contributing to the socio-economic development of the locality.
