Bruno Fernandes extends contract with Man Utd

Fernandes joined Man Utd in January 2020 from Sporting Lisbon in a £68m deal, with two years remaining on his contract which he signed in 2022. In just over four years at Old Trafford, the Portugal international has made 234 appearances in all competitions, scoring 79 goals and providing 67 assists.

The current Man Utd captain has won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup under Erik ten Hag, and reached the Europa League final in 2021 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. There has been speculation that Fernandes could leave this summer but he said in May that he wanted to stay at the club.

News of Fernandes' contract extension is a huge boost for Erik Ten Hag as he prepares Man Utd for their 2024/25 Premier League opener.

Fernandes, who has won three Man Utd Player of the Year awards, believes his "best moments are still ahead" at the club.

After signing his new contract, Fernandes said: "Everyone knows my passion for Man Utd. I understand the responsibility and importance of wearing this shirt, as well as the level of dedication and desire required to represent this great club.

I have had so many special moments here, hearing my name sung from the Stretford End, scoring a hat-trick against Leeds, leading the team out at Old Trafford on European nights and lifting the trophy at Wembley. I would not have signed a new contract if I did not believe that my best moments in a United shirt are still ahead of me.

From my discussions with the club's management and the coach, it is clear that everyone is determined to fight for major trophies in the coming years. I can see how bright the future is and I am delighted to be leading the team forward."

Fernandes was appointed Man Utd captain in July 2023 and he is a big influence on Ten Hag.

Man Utd will start the 2024/25 Premier League season with a home match against Fulham on Saturday morning (2:00 am, August 17).
