India successfully tests surface-to-air missile

According to Deccan Herald , DRDO and Indian Navy have successfully conducted a ground-based launch of a Vertical Launch System Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VL-SRSAM), marking a major milestone for the Indian defence industry.

The missile was aimed at a high-speed target and flew at low altitude. The Indian Ministry of Defense said the missile system successfully tracked and engaged the target.

India successfully tested a short-range surface-to-air missile at the Integrated Test Range Chandipur (India) on September 12, 2024.

"The performance of the system was meticulously monitored and validated using various equipment such as radar electro-optical tracking system and telemetry system deployed at the Integrated Test Range Chandipur," the Indian Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh praised DRDO and the Navy for the achievement, stressing that the test demonstrated the reliability and effectiveness of the VL-SRSAM weapon system. The test was aimed at validating several enhancements to the weapon system, including proximity fuse, seeker and accuracy.

In parallel, DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat emphasized that this system will significantly enhance the operational capacity of the Indian Navy and act as a core force.

Ahead of the test, about 3,100 residents living within a 2.5 km radius of the launch pad were moved to temporary shelters for safety.

The event comes amid India's recent launch of its second nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, INS Arighaat, a move that will significantly boost its deterrence capabilities.
