For decades, cinnamon trees have been a source of income for many households in Quang Tan commune. However, traditional production and exploitation methods have limitations, causing a lot of waste and reduced value; productivity, quality and ecological environment are all affected. But now, cinnamon growers in Quang Tan, most concentrated in Tai Ly Say and Thanh Binh villages, have shifted to organic farming, boldly innovating to increase income and build an increasingly prosperous life. Specifically, farmers proactively avoid or eliminate most of the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and chemical substances that stimulate plant growth. Therefore, the organic cinnamon forest areas in the highland villages of Quang Tan commune are increasingly expanding, showing positive changes in the thinking of applying science and technology to production of the people here.
Mr. Chiu Di Senh is one of the first households in Tai Ly Say village to implement the organic cinnamon growing model according to the project deployed and guided by the Agricultural Extension Center (Department of Agriculture and Environment) and the Department of Science and Technology. The old method is that growers choose varieties based on experience, use chemicals based on estimates... As for the organic growing method, the care process is to only use fertilizer from livestock and poultry waste, take advantage of agricultural by-products combined with composted microorganisms... properly instead of chemical fertilizers; weeding, killing pests by manual methods, combining some biological pesticides with strictly controlled frequency. That natural vegetation will be a "protective layer" on the ground to create moisture, porosity and fertility for the soil. From there, cinnamon trees have the conditions to enhance their natural resistance, optimize productivity and quality of agricultural products...
Mr. Senh shared: Organic farming brings many benefits at the same time, both helping to increase income and protect people's health, while meeting the high demands of the most demanding markets. Applying organic production methods is also a way for each person to join hands to protect clean water sources for daily life, helping the land not to become infertile. In particular, cinnamon products have higher quality, meeting many strict criteria on food safety..., so after harvesting, they will be purchased by cooperatives at a higher price.
In the Tai Ly Say and Thanh Binh villages, many other families are currently applying this farming method. They share their experiences and new techniques with each other; they are willing to exchange labor with each other, and after finishing one house, they gather at another house to develop together. This also helps the solidarity of the villagers become increasingly close. Currently, the area of organic cinnamon cultivation has reached nearly 250 hectares and will increase even more when the next batches of cinnamon are about to reach the age of assessment to meet the organic criteria according to regulations. Quang Tan cinnamon products are purchased by Son Ha Spices Company Limited and Quang Ninh Cinnamon Joint Stock Company for processing, preservation and consumption.
One of the decisive factors bringing the prospect of organic cinnamon growing model in Quang Tan is that people have received close guidance and support from all levels, sectors and local authorities. Implementing the Project "Developing organic agriculture in Quang Ninh province to 2025, with a vision to 2030" of the Provincial People's Committee (according to Decision No. 685/QD-UBND dated March 18, 2022), Quang Tan is located in the development area of 3,000 hectares of organic cinnamon of the province. People are also facilitated in accessing preferential credit policy capital sources, "hand-holding" to effectively apply appropriate science and technology solutions...
Developing organic agriculture, aiming at developing green, clean and sustainable agriculture in Quang Ninh is currently an inevitable development trend, meeting the increasing demands of the agricultural consumer market. According to the report of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the whole province currently has 90 hectares of rice-rice-worm-rice cultivation; 45 hectares of organic rice with an output of about 150 tons; 329 hectares of organic cinnamon with an output of 220 tons... |
