The family of Mr. Vi Van Nhuan, Lan Luong village, Thien Tan commune is a pioneer in raising apple snails since 2021. Taking us to visit his family's apple snail farm, Mr. Nhuan shared: Previously, on this area, my family only farmed, the economic efficiency was not high. During a visit to a snail farming model in Bac Giang province (now Bac Ninh province), I took the initiative to convert the rice fields into ponds, invested in seeds and learned techniques to do it. Currently, I maintain a snail pond model, including a commercial snail farming area and a snail breeding area. On average, my family's commercial snail output reaches about 20 tons per year. In addition, I also provide seeds to people in the area, selling about 10 million seeds every year, bringing in a total income of 1 billion VND after deducting expenses.
Similar to Mr. Nhuan, Mr. Trieu Van Linh, Dia Phan village is also developing this new model. Mr. Linh said: In 2025, I was instructed by Mr. Nhuan on snail farming techniques and converted nearly 1.5 hectares of my family's rice fields to snail farming. I see this model as very promising for development. I can raise 2 batches of snails a year, each batch can be raised for 3 - 3.5 months before being sold. Although it is only the first batch, my family has sold about 5 tons, and is expected to sell 2 more tons of snails this month, with a total income of over 300 million VND after deducting expenses. I see this as a model with high economic efficiency, with low investment costs, so I plan to increase the snail farming area by 1 hectare of rice field to improve economic efficiency.
Not only the above 2 families, many people in the commune have also proactively learned and developed the snail farming model. Currently, the whole commune has about 80 snail farming households (small households raise 1 - 2 sao, large households raise more than 1 mau), mainly concentrated in the villages: Lan Luong, Dia Phan, Lang Ca... All snail farming households are guided by Mr. Nhuan on techniques, ensuring output for the products, with selling prices ranging from 53,000 - 56,000 VND/kg. In addition, the commune has favorable conditions such as natural limestone water source which is very suitable for snail farming, thanks to which the snails are healthy, fat and firm. Therefore, the output for the products is very favorable. The snails raised by the people are consumed as soon as they are harvested.
According to snail farmers in the commune, although snails live in the mud, they really like clean water, so farmers need to ensure that the water environment is always clean. In addition, snails' food is completely natural, such as: taro leaves, cassava leaves, grass, duckweed, squash... so people do not need to spend much money.
Mr. Pham Van Tuyen, Head of the Economic Department of Thien Tan Commune, said: In the past 3 years, a number of households in the commune have converted their rice fields to snail farming for high economic efficiency. Through the farming process, it has been shown that this is a suitable model to increase income for people. From the beginning of 2025 to now, the total snail output of the commune has reached about 140 tons. In the coming time, to help people feel secure in developing the model, we will coordinate to organize training courses to transfer science and technology, instruct people on how to effectively raise snails, and at the same time review and evaluate locations with suitable land and water conditions to continue to replicate the model.
With the economic efficiency it brings, the snail farming model not only helps people have a stable source of income but also contributes to opening up a new direction of economic development, helping people gradually become rich, contributing to socio-economic development, building new rural areas of the commune.
