On Weibo, Instant Digital account revealed that Apple is planning a "miniature notch" for the iPhone 18. This could refer to the Dynamic Island notch taking up less space at the top of the screen with the iPhone model launched in 2026.

The reason for this shrink, according to Instant Digital, is due to changes in the components in the front-facing camera. While this could be done by creating an under-display version of Face ID, the leaker added that this design will not happen on the iPhone 18.

Bringing Face ID below the screen is a necessary step for an iPhone with a completely edge-to-edge screen, without a notch containing the front camera cluster and sensors.

By placing the TrueDepth system's cameras and sensors under the surface of the display, this would allow for a device with a beautiful, completely notch-free display. However, this is technically challenging because the various sensors have to work behind the pixels.

This also coincides with previous rumors. Counterpoint Research analysts also predict that it will take until 2028 for Apple to be able to put all the Face ID components under the screen. This will leave the device with only the selfie camera in the form of a "hole" in the upper left corner of the screen.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman revealed that Apple has prepared a "bold" iPhone Pro model for the 20th anniversary of the iPhone launch in 2027 while developing a design that uses more glass, directly referring to the screen.
