Speaking at the 4th Conference of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Executive Committee for the 2020-2025 term, Ho Chi Minh City Party Secretary Tran Quang Luu Quang said that he received about 12 text messages reflecting that students had to go to school on Saturdays.
According to the feedback, the reason students have to attend extra classes on Saturdays is because they only have 7 classes a day, not 8 classes like previous years.

According to Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Tran Luu Quang, if students only study 7 periods/day, plus life skills training programs, they must study on Saturdays. This regulation is facing many reactions.
Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City Nguyen Van Hieu said that organizing students to study 7 periods/day is carried out according to newly issued regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training .
In addition to the above regulations, the Ministry of Education and Training also guides localities to flexibly organize supplementary activities. Accordingly, in addition to studying culture for 7 periods/day, an 8th period can be added with training and life skills training content.
Previously, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City directed schools that organize 2 sessions/day to not arrange classes on Saturday mornings.
According to Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, about 70-80% of schools in the area currently organize two sessions per day and do not teach on Saturday mornings. However, there are still about 24 primary schools that organize classes on this day, mainly in localities in the old Binh Duong area.
Mr. Hieu said that in these areas, the population is growing rapidly, many schools have more than 100 classes, and there is a lack of specialized classrooms, so they have to arrange additional classes on Saturdays. In addition, some parents also want their children to learn more life skills, so schools respond by organizing classes on Saturdays.

Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Tran Luu Quang said that students having to go to school on Saturdays comes from individual cases, with requests from parents, and due to the difference between physical facilities and the population growth rate in the area.
However, he suggested that the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City review and prevent this situation from continuing. Regarding the integration of life skills training programs, the Department needs to study appropriate plans for effective implementation. The Secretary of the City Party Committee emphasized that people expect the new Ho Chi Minh City to become a typical locality in this regard.
