The veteran and the pain of thousands of martyrs' mothers who have not found their children

VietNamNetVietNamNet30/10/2023

After the war, returning to civilian life, a group of veterans always felt a debt of gratitude to their comrades and teammates. That debt, according to them, was a gratitude to their fallen comrades.

Mr. Phan Van Quy, a soldier who fought directly on the historic Truong Son route and a representative of the veterans group, said: “The words of the Mothers have urged us, the veterans who were lucky enough to return after the war, to do something to bring our comrades back to their families and loved ones. Therefore, a group of veterans came up with the idea of establishing a “Fund to support DNA identification of martyrs’ remains” to join hands with our State in carrying out the work of returning the names to the martyrs.”

According to the media, to date, there are still about 200,000 martyrs' remains that have not been collected, over 300,000 martyrs' remains have been collected and buried in cemeteries but there is still a lack of information.

Mr. Quy pointed out that in recent years, the work of identifying the remains of martyrs with missing information has received great attention from the Party and the State, but in the implementation process, DNA identification still faces many difficulties. Although we know that the major tasks regarding the policy of gratitude to martyrs, especially the search and collection of martyrs' remains, the State - directly many ministries and branches have been and are implementing very effectively. However, according to Mr. Quy, this work requires a race against time, the slower it is, the more difficult it is for DNA identification to identify martyrs.

According to the media, to date, there are still about 200,000 martyrs' remains that have not been collected, over 300,000 martyrs' remains have been collected and buried in cemeteries but there is still a lack of information.

The application of modern technology such as genetic testing to identify martyrs is more necessary than ever. The war ended nearly 50 years ago, so much time has passed that the remains of the fallen martyrs have decomposed. If we do not urgently collect and identify them, it will likely be very difficult to find them soon.

The State has been and is implementing large-scale, comprehensive plans. However, there are still many small but extremely practical problems for poor families of martyrs in remote areas, with little access to information.

Speed up support

Based on the wishes of the martyrs' families to find the remains of their loved ones soon, and to contribute to the State agencies in carrying out activities to identify the remains of martyrs with missing information, the group of veterans wishes to establish a social and charitable fund. This fund operates openly and transparently, supporting work related to DNA identification of the remains of martyrs with missing information to determine their identities," Mr. Quy expressed.

Mr. Phan Van Quy, a major corporation, awarded funding for the DNA identification program under Project 150 of the Government on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day, July 2017.

“If the Fund is established, we will only focus on supporting families and relatives of martyrs in difficult circumstances by providing advice and partial financial support for the following three issues: First, helping them to quickly access information sources about martyrs’ remains. Second, supporting relatives to return to martyrs’ cemeteries and old battlefields to find information sources about martyrs. Finally, supporting families of martyrs to identify remains at DNA identification centers of the State in accordance with regulations,” Mr. Quy said.

The Fund's funding comes entirely from founding members and partly from socialized sources.

Currently, three units with a lot of experience in social work and charity, including the Vietnam Association for Supporting Families of Martyrs, KN Holdings Group and Pacific Group, have agreed to ask the State to establish a "Fund to support DNA identification of martyrs' remains".

The Vietnam Association for Supporting Families of Martyrs is chaired by Lieutenant General Hoang Khanh Hung. After more than 10 years of establishment, the Association has done many practical things in honoring martyrs and those with meritorious services. The Association is a member of the Steering Committee of Project 150 on identifying the remains of martyrs with missing information of the State.

The group of veteran and Labor Hero Le Van Kiem has sponsored 2,700 billion VND for charity activities, gratitude and honoring martyrs.

Hero of the People's Armed Forces, 13th National Assembly Delegate Phan Van Quy, Chairman of the Pacific Group is a founding member of 3 social and charitable organizations. Over the years, the group has sponsored nearly 10 billion VND through the Vietnam Association for Supporting Families of Martyrs to support the work of DNA identification of martyrs' remains.

“The war is long gone, but now there are hundreds of thousands of martyrs’ remains whose identities have not been found. The longer it takes, the harder it is to find their names. As soldiers, we propose to establish a “Fund to support DNA identification of martyrs’ remains” to contribute to returning the names of our comrades, to fulfill the nation’s morality of “remembering the source of water when drinking” and the Party and State’s policy of showing gratitude to martyrs and their families,” Mr. Phan Van Quy, a former Truong Son soldier, emotionally expressed.

Currently, the project to establish a "Fund to support DNA identification of martyrs' remains" is under consideration by ministries and branches.
