"A large-scale attack! Do not leave your shelters," Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram. Air raid sirens also sounded in several other areas.

Military officials in Kiev said air defences were thwarting the attacks. Debris fell in several districts of the capital.

On the Telegram messaging app, the head of Kiev's military administration Serhiy Popko called it a large-scale attack carried out in several waves, in which Russia used only Iranian-made Shahed UAVs. This was the third attack on Kiev in the past 24 hours.

The Kiev capital authorities announced that the country's air defense forces destroyed more than 20 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in this airstrike.

In another development, on the same day, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that eight African countries have officially allowed Kiev to open embassies in their countries, of which two countries are completing the process.

Speaking on television, Mr Kuleba added: "To open all these embassies, we still need to make changes to the budget of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and we are working on this with the Prime Minister to achieve the necessary results by the end of this year."

In December 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Kiev would open 10 embassies in Africa.
