Stable income
Mr. Nguyen Van Thao (born in 1970) is one of the pioneers in growing sim in Tran Hung Dao ward. In 2016, he and his wife, Ms. Pham Thi Chin, decided to invest more than 2 hectares of land to build a sim garden.
At first, many people were skeptical because this was a wild plant, few people thought it could become an economic tree. But after nearly 10 years, time has proven that decision was correct.
The sim season starts in the 6th lunar month and lasts for more than 2 months. On average, his family collects over 50 kg of fruit per day. With the current selling price of about 40,000 VND/kg, on peak days, Mr. Thao earns up to tens of millions of VND from selling sim after deducting labor costs. Thanks to that efficiency, his family has begun to calculate to expand the area, or convert mixed garden land to grow sim.
“Sim is a plant with few pests and diseases, and almost does not need pesticides. After harvesting, only organic fertilizer is needed to help the plant recover. Thanks to that, the product is safe and consumers trust it,” Mr. Thao shared.
Not only bringing economic value, growing sim also helps to effectively utilize the area of hilly land. The tree grows well, requires little care, and is suitable for the working conditions of farmers.

Open new directions
The success of Mr. Thao's family has motivated many households in the neighborhood to follow suit. Among them is Mr. Nguyen Van Vung's family, who currently grows nearly 5 sao of sim.
Mr. Vung said: “Growing sim does not cost much, but the efficiency is quite good. My house has a smaller area but still has a significant additional income, especially in the main season. I think this model is suitable for many households with little land, taking advantage of it will bring sweet fruit.”

Mr. Vung also shared that the harvested sim is sold right in the garden at a stable price. The most favorable thing is that sim is available on the market, customers often order in advance so almost "pick as much as you want, it will be sold out", without having to worry about output like many other agricultural products.
Not stopping there, since the Dong Viet bridge road running through the locality, many households have begun to develop experiential tourism services, combining sightseeing, picking sim, and enjoying sim products right in the garden.

The sim growing model in An Linh is still new, so there are no specific statistics on output or average income. However, according to Mr. Le Thanh Son, Secretary of the An Linh Residential Group Party Cell, the economic efficiency that sim trees bring is quite obvious, because this is a tree with a long life cycle and the later it is, the more fruit it produces .
The entire residential group currently has 5 households growing sim with a total area of over 4 hectares. This area is not much compared to other fruit trees, but it opens up a new direction because sim trees are suitable for the land and climate and bring clear economic efficiency.
Mr. Son believes that if the cultivation of sim is combined with the development of experiential tourism and deep processing such as wine, syrup or jam, the economic value will certainly increase even more. In the coming time, the Party cell and the residential group will encourage households to expand the cultivation area.
In the future, with technical support and market connections, the sim tree can become a typical product of An Linh. If the production and consumption chain is built and registered to participate in the “One Commune One Product” (OCOP) Program, An Linh purple sim will have a clear brand, higher value, and reach out to markets inside and outside the city.

Mr. Thao's story, along with the response of many households like Mr. Vung and the support of the government, is showing a new prospect: the sim tree is not only a childhood memory but has truly become an economic tree, contributing to changing the face of the homeland.
