Penang launches durian traceability system to improve quality

According to The Star, the state of Penang (Malaysia) has implemented a smart monitoring system “Track and Trace” for durians to ensure the authenticity of the state’s precious fruit. The system was launched ahead of the Penang Durian and Fruit Festival, scheduled to take place from June 23 to July 20 at Persiaran Queensbay in Bayan Lepas.

About 60 farmers have committed to using the tagging system, which was launched on June 1, while 20 large-scale farm operators have signed up, said Fahmi Zainol, chairman of the Agricultural Technology, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee. “Farmers must apply for tags themselves and provide valid land ownership documents. Applications through intermediaries will not be accepted,” he said at a press conference in Komtar.

Mr Fahmi urged durian farmers to sign up for the smart monitoring system to prevent durians from other areas from being labelled as Penang. He said the festival would raise the profile of the local fruit by showcasing the uniqueness and quality of the famous durian, while also providing a direct marketing platform to help small-scale farmers increase their sales and income.

The initiative is also part of the state’s strategy to promote agri- tourism , positioning Penang as a top destination for domestic and international tourists seeking an agricultural experience. Through the system, each durian from Penang will be tagged with a QR code, which consumers can simply scan to verify its origin.

The state government has proposed making the use of this tagging system mandatory for farmers. Those who register will be given priority in government support, promotional programmes and official events.
