Dong Thap: Need breakthrough investment to awaken Tan Thanh sea's potential

Tan Thanh beach resort, located in Go Cong Dong commune, Dong Thap province, was once known as one of the most beautiful black sand beaches in the Mekong Delta. However, after many years of lack of investment and maintenance, this resort is facing serious degradation, causing a significant decrease in the number of tourists.

The pedestrian bridge at Tan Thanh beach tourist area is seriously degraded.

The only highlight of the tourist area is the pier, about 300m long, leading to the sea, built in 2005. Currently, after 20 years of use, this bridge is severely damaged, the bridge beams are peeling, the steel bars are rusting and exposed, and the railings and bridge deck are cracked in many places. Due to the unsafe situation, the local government has had to put up a solid fence, prohibiting tourists and residents from entering.

Besides, the tourism services here are also very poor. There are only a few simple restaurants left, surrounded by litter and abandoned items, causing unsightliness.

Lack of entertainment services is also one of the reasons why tourists do not want to return. Vo Minh Duc, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City, expressed his disappointment: "I traveled a long distance but there were almost no entertainment services, nor was there a beach."

One of the issues that seriously affects the tourism image here is the situation of "touts" soliciting tourists. Many tourists report that they are often followed by groups of people on motorbikes, persistently soliciting tourists, causing an uncomfortable feeling.

Mr. Le Trung Truc (tourist from My Tho, Dong Thap) shared: It has been a long time since I came back but I am really disappointed, not like in my memory. Tan Thanh beach used to be crowded and bustling, now it has seriously degraded. Poor service, plus the soliciting scene made me feel uncomfortable when coming here to relax.

On normal days, Tan Thanh Beach Resort only welcomes a few dozen visitors, most of whom only stay for about an hour due to the lack of entertainment services to keep them there. During holidays and Tet, the number of visitors increases but not significantly, mainly from local people and neighboring provinces. This reality shows the waste when the potential of Tan Thanh beach has not been properly exploited to attract international tourists and visitors from far away.

Many abandoned items at Tan Thanh beach tourist area cause loss of beauty.

Mr. Le Cong Tam, manager of Huong Bien restaurant, who has been doing business in the area for more than 10 years, said that the number of tourists coming here is decreasing. Currently, there is a lack of planning here, restaurants and tourism services are opening up synchronously, causing customers to not concentrate. The facilities are also degraded because they have not been repaired for a long time, making the tourist area more and more deserted. He really hopes that the authorities will pay attention and invest to restore the Tan Thanh beach tourist area.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tam, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Go Cong Dong District, tourism activities in Tan Thanh beach still have limitations such as underdeveloped infrastructure and monotonous tourism products. Along with that, the planning of sea tourism here is not yet synchronized. The commune is waiting for instructions from the Central Government to adjust it to suit the socio-economic development situation in the locality.

Littering causes disgust at Tan Thanh beach tourist area (Dong Thap).

Regarding the reflection of the degraded sea tourism bridge, Go Cong Dong commune has sent a document requesting the People's Committee of Dong Thap province to consider and direct relevant departments and branches to develop a plan to dismantle and rebuild it, in order to create a highlight to attract tourists.

In the coming time, Go Cong Dong commune will closely coordinate with departments and branches of Dong Thap province to focus on supporting and creating favorable conditions to promote investment in Tan Thanh coastal tourism area. The commune will build and connect tours and tourist routes with communes in the province to diversify types of tourist services on the basis of exploiting potentials and advantages associated with the development of coastal ecotourism.
