The driving force for innovation
Resolution No. 71-NQ/TW (Resolution 71) of the Politburo on breakthroughs in education and training development sets out the task of innovating the model of specialized schools and gifted schools to focus on nurturing national talents and expanding specialized STEM/STEAM classes.
Mr. Tran Van Hung, Principal of Thai Nguyen High School for the Gifted (Thai Nguyen province) expressed his opinion: Resolution 71 creates very favorable conditions for education in general and the specialized school system in particular, helping teachers and students of the school have very good conditions and spirit to continuously improve the quality and effectiveness of education.
“Resolution 71 creates a particularly meaningful motivation for the School to implement a specific roadmap and plan to innovate and improve the work of nurturing talents and expanding specialized STEM/STEAM classes,” Mr. Tran Van Hung emphasized.

Thai Nguyen High School for the Gifted currently has 116 staff, teachers and employees, with 1,273 students studying in 12 specialized subject groups.
Not only focusing on key education, in recent times, the School has also encouraged and created an environment and conditions for students to explore, innovate and develop comprehensively through scientific and technical research activities, start-up ideas, cultural and artistic sports. In particular, from the 2022-2023 school year, the School will implement two more subjects: Fine Arts and Music, to help students develop better in the field of art.
In the coming time, the School will continue to focus on improving the capacity of the teaching staff; pay attention to applying digital technology in teaching and learning; implement a roadmap for teaching a number of subjects in English and gradually make English the second language; strive for each student to know at least one sport and art subject.
According to the plan, the School will advise on increasing the number of specialized classes for Math, expanding training in some specialized foreign language subjects, first Korean, then Japanese.
Strategic steps for cutting-edge education
Studying Resolution 71, Mr. Ha Tien Sy, Principal of Cao Bang Provincial High School for the Gifted, affirmed that this is a correct, timely and necessary policy. Mr. Sy is pleased with the content of expanding specialized STEM/STEAM classes.
Mr. Ha Tien Sy said: Although located in a mountainous province with many difficulties, over the past years, Cao Bang High School for the Gifted has focused on investing in developing STEM/STEAM education. In the 2024-2025 school year, the School won 3 international awards, 2 national awards in STEM and Robotics education; 2 national awards, 11 provincial awards in the Science and Technology Competition for high school students. Investing in developing STEM/STEAM education helps students improve their knowledge and practical skills, and have the conditions to keep up with the current Industrial Revolution 4.0 and digital transformation.

"However, Cao Bang province still faces many difficulties, so the province's Specialized High School still has many limitations in terms of facilities, equipment, laboratories, and invention spaces. Therefore, investing in upgrading and expanding specialized schools is not only a necessary condition, but also a strategic step to ensure fairness in access to high-quality education for students," added Mr. Ha Tien Sy.
To make the specialized school system more effective, it is necessary to focus on in-depth investment: Building centers for experiments, inventions, and digital learning; equipping smart classrooms and strong network infrastructure; having a mechanism to regularly support scientific research and STEM/STEAM; selecting and giving special treatment to excellent teachers; strengthening teacher training abroad, and participating in innovation forums.
The model of connecting specialized schools - universities - technology enterprises has also been proposed by many experts. This model helps students to be advised by scientists, participate in practical research and creative startup competitions. At the same time, specialized schools need to develop research skills, debate, teamwork, and technological thinking so that students can become "young scientists" and not just practice for exams.
Innovating the model of specialized schools and gifted schools in the spirit of Resolution 71 not only aims to improve the quality of teaching and learning, but also aims at the long-term goal: Building an elite human resource team for the country in the digital age. When specialized schools become centers for nurturing talents, closely connected with universities, research institutes and businesses, this will be an important foundation for Vietnam to develop science and technology, innovation and sustainable international integration.
