To dispel students' worries about this issue, many schools in Dong Nai province have invested in school toilets, ensuring long-term health for students.
bad habit
For many students, school toilets used to be a “nightmare” because they were unclean and smelly. Therefore, they did not dare to go to the toilet at school or did not dare to drink water during class to avoid having to go to the toilet.
NLC, a third grader at a primary school in Trang Dai ward, Dong Nai province, confided: “During recess, a lot of students go to the toilet. Many students do not flush after going, the smell is very bad. Every time I go to the toilet, I have to cover my nose and walk quickly to get out. There are days when I do not dare to go to the toilet, I wait until I get home to go.”
The results of monitoring school health work conducted by the Dong Nai Provincial Center for Disease Control in coordination with the education sector at a number of schools in the province at the end of May 2025 showed that more than 40% of students at schools suffered from eye diseases. Next were diseases of the teeth, mouth, and ear, nose and throat. In particular, the rate of overweight and obese students was much higher than the rate of malnourished students.
Regarding this issue, Dr. Ha Minh Chi, Department of Urology (Thong Nhat General Hospital) said: Holding urine continuously, repeating too many times, in the long term will negatively affect children's health.
According to Dr. Chi, the most frightening side effects of holding urine are infections, urethritis, and cystitis. Holding urine for a long time causes urine to stagnate in the bladder, creating conditions for bacteria to grow, leading to urinary tract infections. When children hold urine frequently, the bladder has to hold urine for a long time, which can easily reduce bladder contractions, disrupt the urination reflex, and cause urinary incontinence and uncontrolled urination.
In addition, if the bladder is too full due to holding urine, urine can flow back to the kidneys, causing pyelonephritis, which can eventually lead to chronic kidney disease. Urine that stagnates for a long time can easily deposit mineral salts, forming stones. Therefore, going to the toilet when you have to urinate is very important to ensure your child's health both now and in the future.
Clean, musical toilet
Understanding the importance of toilets in schools, recently, many schools have focused on investing and repairing to make school toilets green, clean and beautiful.
Principal of Binh Da Primary School (Tam Hiep Ward, Dong Nai Province) Tran Thi Huyen shared: The school currently has 30 toilets for boys and girls, all of which are equipped with high toilets. The toilets are always cleaned, with clean water, paper, soap, and sinks. In addition, the school also decorates propaganda slogans, plants in front and inside the toilets, has music and essential oils, ensuring the toilets are always clean and odorless.
At Tran Hung Dao Secondary School (Tran Bien Ward, Dong Nai Province), to help students no longer be afraid of the toilet, the school has planted and placed trees outside and inside the toilets. The toilet area also has soft music and the scent of essential oils.
Similarly, at Nguyen An Ninh Primary School (Tam Hiep Ward, Dong Nai Province), each classroom block has separate toilets for boys and girls. In front of the toilets, the school provides plastic slippers for students to change into before entering the toilets to prevent slipping and avoid getting their shoes wet. When students turn on the lights in the toilets, soft music will be played and the scent of essential oils will gradually spread.
Principal of Nguyen An Ninh Primary School Hoang Thi Ngoc said: At primary school age, many students are not yet aware of maintaining public hygiene. Therefore, the school has contracted with cleaning staff to clean regularly; at the same time, educate students on how to use the toilet properly, know how to wash their hands with soap after using the toilet...
Meanwhile, at Lac Hong Bilingual Primary and Secondary School (Tran Bien Ward, Dong Nai Province), school sanitation in particular and student health care in general are given great attention. According to Ms. Hoang Thi Diem Trang, the school's principal, the school has a full-time medical staff with a practice certificate. The school strictly implements the purchase of medicine and medical supplies according to the instructions of the authorities. On the website, in the app connecting the school and parents, there is information on how to give medicine to students, ensuring close contact between the school and parents in giving medicine to children if they are unfortunately sick.
To date, all of the more than 2,200 students of Lac Hong Bilingual Primary, Secondary and High School have participated in health insurance. At the beginning of each school year, the school coordinates with Dong Nai Children's Hospital and other medical facilities in the province to organize general health check-ups for students.
