Traffic police check people's compliance with traffic safety regulations on Hung Vuong Street, Luong Van Tri Ward.
From January 1, 2025, according to Decree 168, each driving license is attached with 12 points in the traffic violation management system. Drivers will be deducted points if they violate, according to the levels. When all 12 points are deducted, the driving license will be revoked, the violator is forced to participate in retraining and take a theory test to be reissued.
In the province, after more than 8 months of implementation, the traffic police force has inspected, detected and handled about 20,800 violations, with an estimated fine of more than 52 billion VND. Of these, about 2,460 cases had their driving license points deducted. The main violations were driving after consuming alcohol (accounting for 53%) and speeding (accounting for 40%).
Lieutenant Colonel Phuong Thuc Dinh, Deputy Head of the Traffic Police Department, Provincial Police, said: Compared to before, this new form of punishment has a deeper impact on awareness of traffic law compliance. If in the past, many violators just paid the fine and forgot, now, each violation leaves a trace and directly affects the right to drive. The point deduction mechanism creates pressure for drivers to consider their behavior every time they participate in traffic. Just a few re-offending times can put them at risk of losing their driving license, so many people are starting to form the habit of controlling their behavior better.
Since the beginning of 2025, the Traffic Police have detected nearly 20,800 violations, a decrease of over 15,110 cases compared to the same period in 2024. In the first 8 months of 2025, the whole province had 248 traffic accidents, killing 55 people and injuring 237 people. Compared to the same period in 2024, there were 57 fewer cases (18.6%), 6 fewer deaths (10%), and 39 fewer injuries (14%). |
To ensure feasibility, point deduction has been integrated into the modern monitoring system, thereby increasing transparency and control efficiency. Many cases where only a few points have been deducted have shown clear hesitation when participating in traffic.
Major Ta Van Hau, Deputy Captain of Traffic Police Team No. 1, Traffic Police Department, said: On National Highway 1B, since the beginning of the year, the force has handled 390 violations, of which 70 cases had their driving license points deducted. The main violations were alcohol concentration and speed. The number of violations on the route has decreased by about 30% compared to the same period in 2024, showing the clear effectiveness of the point deduction measure.
The figures on National Highway 1B only reflect part of the reality. Across the province, with the fear of losing points, many drivers have complied more strictly, contributing to a significant reduction in violations. Since the beginning of 2025, the traffic police have detected nearly 20,800 violations, a decrease of over 15,110 cases compared to the same period in 2024. This result shows that the point deduction mechanism has had a positive impact on traffic safety, contributing to the formation of more civilized and safer driving habits.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Nga, a taxi driver in Luong Van Tri Ward, shared: My colleague once had his driving license points deducted for speeding. Since then, I have learned from my experience and strictly followed the regulations of the Road Traffic Law. Thinking about the fact that if all points are deducted and I have to retake the driving test, I always consider carefully before every action. For me, "keeping points" is not only a personal responsibility but also directly related to income and job stability.
According to data from the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee, in the first 8 months of 2025, there were 248 traffic accidents in the province, killing 55 people and injuring 237 people. Compared to the same period in 2024, there were 57 fewer cases (18.6%), 6 fewer deaths (10%), and 39 fewer injuries (14%). This shows that the measure of deducting driving license points has created more pressure on management, forcing drivers to comply with regulations. This form not only helps to strictly control but is also a regular reminder for each driver to raise awareness, contributing to building a safe and civilized traffic culture, towards the goal of sustainable accident reduction.
