Bridge to help people of Muong Chanh commune escape poverty

Thanks to preferential loans from the Social Policy Bank, the cow farming model of Mr. Loc Van Pang in Pieng Tat village, Muong Chanh commune is increasingly being replicated.

With the characteristics of a border commune with more than 95% of ethnic minorities, Muong Chanh was previously a particularly difficult commune, with an almost absolute poverty rate. In recent years, through policy credit capital, hundreds of households have had the opportunity to invest in production development and improve their livelihoods. According to statistics, up to now, the total outstanding debt of the whole commune has reached nearly 30 billion VND, with more than 500 households borrowing from 10 preferential policy credit programs. The loan capital not only helps people develop the economy , but also creates confidence and motivation for people to boldly change their thinking and working methods. From this capital source, many households have built farms, livestock farms, invested in planting forests, fruit trees, raising breeding cows... bringing clear economic efficiency. Up to now, the commune has more than 100 households developing livestock and poultry farming on different scales, creating more jobs for local workers.

Thanks to the support of the government and the Social Policy Bank, many economic models have become typical in the poverty alleviation movement. A typical example is the household of Mr. Ha Van Tan in Chai village, with a herd of more than 20 cows raised for commercial purposes, earning over 200 million VND per year. Or the goat-raising model combined with chickens and ducks of Mr. Lo Van Thong's family in Bong village, bringing in over 300 million VND per year; the cow-raising model of Mr. Loc Van Pang in Pieng Tat village earns over 100 million VND per year... In addition, the combined garden-pond-barn models have also been replicated, creating a stable source of income for many households. The commune also encourages the planting of bamboo shoots, fruit trees, and concentrated forest planting associated with sustainable economic development. Up to now, the border commune has recorded more than 100 households voluntarily applying to escape poverty, showing positive changes in people's awareness and life.

Mr. Lo Van Thong in Bong village shared: “Without preferential credit capital from the Social Policy Bank, my family would hardly have escaped poverty and built the economic model we have today. From a place of food shortages, now we not only have enough to take care of our children's education, we also have savings to expand livestock farming.”

After nearly 3 terms of persistently implementing the poverty reduction goal, Muong Chanh commune has now completed 19/19 criteria, becoming the first commune in the old Muong Lat district to meet the NTM standards. This is also the border commune that was honored to have General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong visit and work in September 2011, with the desire to build Muong Chanh into a model commune for poverty reduction associated with NTM construction. For more than a decade, with continuous efforts, the local Party Committee, government and people have fulfilled the wishes of the late General Secretary.

To achieve today's results is the result of the efforts of the Party Committee, the government and the people of Muong Chanh commune to overcome difficulties. Despite the low starting point, with the support of the Party and the State, especially preferential credit capital, people are gradually turning the goal of sustainable poverty reduction into reality. The results achieved are just the beginning. According to local leaders, Muong Chanh continues to identify the replication of effective economic models, linking production with forest protection, exploiting the potential of land and local labor as a long-term direction. Along with that, improving credit quality, effectively using loan capital, and strengthening agricultural and forestry extension work will be key solutions.

Director of the Muong Lat Social Policy Bank Branch, Vu Duc Thuong, said: From a particularly poor commune, Muong Chanh now has many households rising to become well-off, and people's lives are increasingly stable. Lush green forests, livestock farms, household economic models... are affirming new vitality in the border area every day. Muong Chanh today is a vivid demonstration of the effectiveness of preferential credit policies, showing that with the attention of the Party, the State and the determination of the people, even the most difficult lands can change and rise strongly.
