The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has warned that the food crisis will become increasingly severe across East Africa and the Horn of Africa in 2023.

According to IGAD’s 2023 Food Crisis Report, up to 30 million people are expected to need humanitarian food assistance in Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda. Of the 30 million food insecure people, an estimated 7.5 million are in Kenya, Somalia and South Sudan.

The report also notes that the ongoing conflict in Sudan is also threatening people’s access to food, which could lead to a rapid deterioration in food and nutrition security in the capital Khartoum and Darfur, even if rains from March to May 2023 provide some relief from the worst drought to hit the Horn of Africa in more than four decades.
