"This finding is exciting because it provides further evidence of the best ways to reduce the risk of cancer, particularly breast, bowel and lung cancer," said co-author Dr Fiona Malcomson, a researcher at Newcastle University (UK), according to the Express .

About 40% of cancer cases are linked to lifestyle habits such as physical inactivity, smoking, obesity, poor diet and heavy alcohol consumption.

This finding is exciting because it provides further evidence about the best ways to reduce the risk of cancer, especially breast, bowel and lung cancer.

New research from Newcastle University has confirmed that ditching these habits could reduce your risk of cancer. In particular, cutting down on alcohol, red meat and processed foods could help prevent bowel, breast and lung cancers.

What did the study find?

Experts at Newcastle University have reviewed the evidence on the impact of following the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) and American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) 'Cancer Prevention Recommendations' on cancer risk.

They reviewed and analyzed 18 cancer prevention studies to investigate this. The authors also scored participants on how well they followed the recommendations.

The results showed that following the above Cancer Prevention Recommendations significantly reduced the risk of cancer.

Specifically, every 1 point increase in the scale of assessing compliance with recommendations will help reduce the risk of bowel cancer by 12%, reduce the risk of breast cancer by 11% and reduce the risk of lung cancer by 8%, according to Express .

And the more you follow recommendations, including maintaining a healthy weight and eating plenty of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes, the lower your risk of disease.

Dr Fiona notes: By following these recommendations, people can reduce their risk of several types of cancer, and we recommend that people follow them as closely as possible. In particular, the strongest evidence suggests that cutting down on alcohol, red meat and processed foods can help prevent bowel, breast and lung cancers.
