Eighth seed Amanda Anisimova pulled off a major upset at the US Open on the morning of September 4, defeating second seed Iga Swiatek to reach the semi-finals. The victory not only propelled the American deeper into the tournament, but also sweetly avenged her disastrous defeat to the same opponent in the Wimbledon final.
Anisimova suffered a 0-6, 0-6 defeat to Swiatek at Wimbledon in July, but the eighth seed showed a completely different form at Arthur Ashe Stadium, winning convincingly 6-4, 6-3.

Swiatek, the reigning Wimbledon and WTA Cincinnati Open champion, entered the US Open as the favourite to win the title. However, the Polish player's hopes of winning a seventh Grand Slam title were dashed after a dramatic 1 hour and 36 minute match.
“Coming back from Wimbledon like this is really special for me,” Anisimova said after the match, highlighting her efforts to turn things around after a painful defeat. “I felt like I worked really hard to turn things around after that. I knew I had to work really hard. It was a really tough match, a real battle for me,” she added.
Swiatek admitted her defeat stemmed from problems on her serve, with a first-serve success rate of just 50% and winning just 10 of her 30 second-serve points. “I couldn’t have won the match today playing like that, serving like that, and Amanda being very aggressive on her returns. Everything was completely different. She moved better, played better. Everything was different,” said Swiatek, who said Anisimova’s performance was completely different to Wimbledon.
The quarter-final match started on a shaky note for Anisimova, who was broken in the first game. However, the American quickly regained control, breaking Swiatek and maintaining her advantage. The turning point of the set came in the 10th game, when Swiatek made a service error, giving Anisimova a set point and the set ended 6-4.

In the second set, Swiatek tried to regain her form and took an early 2-0 lead. But Anisimova once again exploited a weakness in her opponent's serve to break and level the score. With another good serve, Anisimova took a 4-3 lead, and then Swiatek double-faulted on break point, allowing her opponent to serve out the match.
Anisimova quickly led 40-0, winning three decisive points. Although Swiatek saved the first two points, Anisimova was lucky when another net shot bounced out of Swiatek's reach, sealing the win for the American.
Anisimova will face either two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka or 11th seed Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic for a place in the final.
