A moment of sharing from a young officer with a passion for journalism

Editor's note: Major Hoang Duc Danh (pen name Hoang Danh), currently working at the Political Department, Division 5 (Military Region 7) - one of the 10 outstanding young faces of the entire army in 2023, is a familiar contributor to the People's Army Newspaper and several other newspapers inside and outside the Army. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day, we would like to publish a moment of "heartfelt" sharing of this young officer of the Co Ho ethnic group with the work of an amateur "journalist"...

… As a child of the Co Ho ethnic group, I have always had a strong love for the majestic mountain and forest scenery of the great forest. It is the rustic, wild, and pure nature of “mother nature” that has nurtured and formed in me a love of literature since I was still in school until now.

Major Hoang Duc Danh always observes and seeks information from many fields related to the spiritual life of soldiers to write articles for newspapers.

In 2014, after graduating from the Political Officer School , I was assigned to work at Regiment 5, Division 5 (Military Region 7). As someone who likes to read newspapers, if I don't read a newspaper for a day, I feel extremely restless and uncomfortable. When I was a company political commissar, we were given newspapers every day by the unit to read to the soldiers. Through reading newspapers, especially the People's Army Newspaper, I learned a lot of good models and creative ways of doing things from units throughout the army, helping me gain valuable experience in managing andeducating soldiers. The more I read newspapers, the more I pondered and asked myself: "Why does my unit have many effective models and ways of doing things in carrying out tasks and many examples of good people and good deeds that need to be promoted, spread, and replicated, but they rarely appear in the newspapers?"

With that question, I immediately had the idea of ​​going online to consult, research, and learn how to write news and articles. While the idea was brewing, I was also appointed by my superiors as the Mass Work Assistant of Regiment 5 (in 2018). In my new position, I had the opportunity to contact, meet, and interact with journalists inside and outside the Army. Since then, my questions about writing have been answered by "experts". That has given me more motivation to start getting acquainted with this new job.

Having a bit of a talent for writing, I immediately started writing news about unit activities. Although the news content was short, about 200 to 300 words, I had to read it over and over again before I was confident enough to submit it for publication. At first, my news was commented on and edited many times by the editors, then I wrote and submitted more articles. Every time it was published, I compared and checked each sentence and each word that the newspaper had edited and revised to draw lessons for myself, especially in logical thinking, how to structure news and articles, and then continued to practice and correct shortcomings to present the issue in a more coherent, concise, and understandable way. I still remember clearly the feeling when I first held in my hand a newspaper with a news item written by my own hand, at that time I could say the joy and happiness were hard to describe in words.

Not only passionate about writing, Major Hoang Duc Danh is also a good reporter, participating in many competitions at all levels.

When I got used to writing, I considered writing for newspapers as an elegant hobby, writing to learn, learning to write. After work, when I had free time, I read books and wrote for newspapers. At first, I mainly collaborated with the Military Zone 7 Newspaper, later I continued to expand and connect with newspapers, such as: People's Army Newspaper, Tay Ninh Newspaper, Tien Phong Newspaper, Thanh Nien Magazine... I carefully kept all the articles published in print newspapers...

Journalism requires the writer to be dedicated to be able to maintain it for a long time. Because in reality, the royalties for news and articles are not much, but the greatest joy is to have more readers know you, to give you more spiritual joy through exchanges, to have more writing friends in the South and the North. Journalism not only equips and supplements me with a very rich, practical, and useful amount of knowledge, but also helps me have a more objective, profound, and accurate view of events and issues in both life and work.

More specifically, I am very pleased and happy that I am the one who has positively inspired the young cadres about their passion for writing, from which more and more collaborators and correspondents for press agencies inside and outside the Army have appeared.
