The 2024 Ho Chi Minh City public 10th grade entrance exam includes three subjects: Math, Literature, and Foreign Language with an exam structure that enhances practical application questions, according to the Departmentof Education and Training.
The information was shared by Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, on the morning of November 24.
Candidates take the essay test in 3 subjects: Math, Literature and Foreign Language, all with a coefficient of 1. Of which, Math and Literature have 120 minutes to complete, Foreign Language 90 minutes. If registering for specialized or integrated grade 10, candidates will take an additional specialized or integrated subject test in 150 minutes.
The content of the 10th grade exam is in the secondary school curriculum, mainly in grade 9. According to Mr. Quoc, the exam does not only test students' subject knowledge but also focuses on testing their ability to apply, read and understand, and think logically. The Department advocates increasing questions that apply learned knowledge to solve real-life situations. The exam structure will ensure differentiation, suitable for admission.
"Students need to link learning with solving practical problems, avoid learning by rote," Mr. Quoc advised.
According to Mr. Quoc, candidates can still register for 3 wishes to enter public grade 10, regardless of region, but priority is given to schools near home, to avoid the case of being admitted but unable to attend school because the house is far from the school.
He said that from January to April 2024, the Department will coordinate with high schools to advise grade 9 students and parents about exams, curriculum at high schools, and how to set appropriate wishes.

The 2023 Ho Chi Minh City public 10th grade exam took place in early June with nearly 96,000 candidates taking the exam. Of these, about 77,300 students passed (80%).
However, this year, nearly 5,000 students who passed the entrance exam did not enroll. Not only in schools in the suburbs, but even top schools are lacking dozens of quotas. For the first time, Ho Chi Minh City organized additional recruitment but still had nearly 2,000 vacant spots.
