The story of the special forces soldiers, specifically the Saigon special forces soldiers in the resistance war against the US, has been portrayed quite a lot in literary, cinematic and theatrical works. Each work tries to portray and express in the most realistic and unique way the exploits, heroic spirit, sacrifice, and even the private feelings of the special forces soldiers of the past, leaving a unique impression in the hearts of the public. Therefore, when the Traditional Arts Theater staged the play “Day of Return” in the form of folk opera, it was predicted that it would face certain pressures. “The staging of the play “The Day of Return” is part of the 2025 mission of the Traditional Arts Theater. In particular, this year is a year with many major events of the country such as the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and the reunification of the country, the 80th anniversary of the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, etc., so the unit wishes to, through the production of a stage work on the theme of revolutionary war, contribute to expressing feelings and gratitude to the soldiers who fought bravely and sacrificed for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland. Therefore, in nearly the past month, the collective leadership, staging team, artists, actors, and musicians of the theater have worked hard to complete the play,” said Director of the Traditional Arts Theater Nguyen Ai Quoc.

The folk opera Bai Choi “Day of Return” also has another name “Gap lai nguoi da chet” with a literary script by Dr. Nguyen Dang Chuong; the author adapted the Bai Choi script by screenwriter Nguyen Sy Chuc; director People's Artist Nguyen Hoai Hue; music by Meritorious Artist Ngo Huu Lai; art design by Quang Nhut; and the participation of artists, actors, and musicians of the Bai Choi Folk Opera Troupe (under the Traditional Arts Theater). The work lasts more than 100 minutes, with 8 different scenes telling the story of the life of fighting in enemy territory of the Saigon commandos. With their intelligence, bravery, and patriotism, the soldiers completed the noble mission entrusted by the organization, contributing greatly to the overall victory of the nation in the resistance war against the US to save the country. Along with the glorious feats are the silent sacrifices of the commandos. There are people who have suffered immeasurable losses and disadvantages for many years, and then when the "curtains" are lifted, the qualities of revolutionary soldiers who are loyal to the Fatherland and the people shine even brighter.
The story “The Day of Return” begins with a surprising reunion between nun Thuy Trang and Mr. Duc (who is currently working as a caretaker at Bien Hoa Cemetery). The two Saigon special forces soldiers of the past, after the country’s reunification, always remember and look for each other. From the meeting of the two comrades, comrades who fought side by side in battle, the audience is taken back in time to the days of Saigon special forces soldiers. There, the audience sees the glorious days of fighting, the sacrifices of the special forces soldiers, the crimes of the American imperialists and the puppet army and government of Saigon against our people. In the sacrifices of the special forces soldiers, there are hidden grievances that are difficult to put into words. And that secret pain can only be resolved by their comrades, and then, everyone loves and respects the soldiers of the past even more. When the play ended, the audience felt the message the work wanted to convey: The war has passed, there are silent painful losses, there are sacrifices that cannot be shared, only those involved can understand. But the sweet aftertaste of happiness will make up for the pain and sacrifices of the past.

According to People's Artist Hoai Hue, the folk song and play "Day of Return" was staged in the atmosphere of the whole country celebrating the 80th anniversary of National Day, so the spirit and training atmosphere of the artists, actors and musicians were all very excited. This year, the folk song and play troupes of Gia Lai province and Da Nang city all staged plays on the theme of revolutionary war, so the fact that Khanh Hoa province staged the play "Day of Return" contributed to enriching the theatrical works on the above theme. In just a short period of time, the unit had to carry out many different professional tasks, but the play "Day of Return" was still completed on schedule, which was a great effort. According to screenwriter Nguyen Sy Chuc, this is a play with good content, clear ideological theme, well-rounded actors, and impressive stage decoration.
From the perspective of a member of the Provincial Arts Council, Meritorious Artist Hoang Minh Tam said that he had seen this script performed by the Army Cheo Theater, and had also seen the play staged in the form of a drama stage, but when watching the folk song and play "Day Tro Ve" he still found the adapted script, direction and music to be good. It can be said that the staging team and the collective of artists, actors and musicians have completed the play well. However, in the coming time, it is necessary to pay more attention to some details related to the main character's costumes; the singing of the actors in some places needs to pay attention to properly expressing the techniques of the melodies...
