In recent years, the number of vehicles coming for repair at Workshop X81 has increased rapidly, the technical condition of the input is poor, the number of vehicles of the II series has increased compared to previous years. Basically, the II series vehicles and some command UAZ vehicles have been equipped with air conditioning systems. When received, most of these parts were severely damaged.
Previously, the diagnosis of failures mainly relied on the experience of the repairman, without specific measuring equipment. After the repair was completed, to know whether the system was operating stably or not, it had to be installed directly on the vehicle. If it did not work, it had to be removed and repaired again. This manual method caused waste of labor, materials and time, leading to poor quality and repair progress according to plan, increasing production costs.

Concerned by reality, Major Dang Trung Kien started to research and find solutions. After many months of testing, the initiative "Automotive air conditioning system testing device" was born, completely overcoming previous shortcomings. The device has a compact structure but integrates all the components including: Bracket, electric motor, air conditioner compressor, belt, control panel, pressure gauge, suction and compression pipe, gas filter... With a flexible operating mechanism, the device can quickly check common errors such as the compression capacity of the air conditioner compressor, the tightness of the system, the status of the condenser - evaporator, as well as vacuum the system before charging gas.
Sharing about the research process, Major Dang Trung Kien said: “The idea came to me very simply. Every day, directly witnessing the workers struggling with broken air conditioning systems, often repairing and re-repairing, disassembling and reassembling with great difficulty but with low efficiency, I thought: “If only there were supporting equipment, everything would be much easier”. That concern urged me to research and explore, even though I knew that the research path would not be easy. There were nights when I stayed late at the workshop, testing and adjusting every small detail. Sometimes when I failed, the equipment was not running stably, I was discouraged, but thinking about my brothers who were working day and night on repairs, I had more motivation. For me, the greatest joy is not that the initiative is rewarded, but that it really helps the brothers to be less tired, work more effectively, and contribute a small part to completing the unit's common tasks”.
As the person who directly applied the initiative to military car repair, Major Tran Tuan Long, Head of the Electrical Team, Motorcycle Workshop, said: “The device is truly the “right arm” of the repairman. Thanks to it, we can immediately identify the damaged part, quickly isolate the error and choose the appropriate treatment. This helps save time and effort, while ensuring higher repair quality.”

What is special about Workshop X81 is that the innovations come not only from scientific thinking but also from the love for the profession and dedication of the workers. From wrenches, pliers to technological lines, all bear the mark of creativity. Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Dang Phuong, Director of Workshop X81, commented: “This is a very practical initiative with high application value. It helps save 30-50% of labor and material costs, while shortening repair progress.”
According to the commander of Workshop X81, the effectiveness of the equipment does not stop at economic benefits. More importantly, the technical quality of the repaired vehicles is improved, meeting the requirements of combat readiness and training of units in the Military Region. The initiative can be easily replicated and applied at stations, repair workshops of divisions, brigades, and Military Commands of provinces and cities in the entire Military Region. This is the basis for promoting the movement of technical innovation research in units, encouraging the spirit of "each person has an idea, each unit has an initiative".
The initiative "Equipment for checking air conditioning systems on cars" by Major Dang Trung Kien won the A prize at the Military Region level and was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Military Region 3 Command for its outstanding achievements in innovation research activities in 2025. In particular, this project was selected to participate in the "Creative Youth in the Army" Award in 2025, a large playground that honors typical creative ideas of the Army's youth.
