According to RT on September 17, Foreign Minister Lavrov said that EU countries are trying to interfere in Ukraine's peace process despite their openly hostile stance towards Russia, and stressed that the bloc should be excluded from the negotiations for that reason.
"It is clear that EU countries are trying, quite blatantly, to gain a place at the negotiating table. However, there is no place for them there," Foreign Minister Lavrov said at a meeting on September 17, referring to the EU's discussion of the possibility of deploying troops to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

Russia has always opposed the deployment of any Western forces in Ukraine for any reason, stressing that one of the main causes of the conflict is NATO's expansion towards Russia's doorstep.
Moscow also warned that any unauthorized foreign forces in Ukraine would be considered "legitimate military targets".
Mr. Lavrov said that both the EU and Kiev are trying to persuade US President Donald Trump to abandon efforts to resolve the conflict (Ukraine), and return to a stalemate with Russia.
Previously, President Trump declared that Ukraine would not be able to join NATO or take back Crimea, the land that voted to annex Russia in a 2014 referendum. The White House boss also shifted his focus from seeking a temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine to pursuing a long-term peace solution.
