CEO Zuckerberg accused of allowing Meta to use pirated books to train AI

(CLO) Meta, Facebook's parent company, has been accused of illegally using copyrighted books to train its artificial intelligence. What's even more surprising is that this was done with the permission of Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta.

Prominent authors like Ta-Nehisi Coates and Sarah Silverman have come forward to accuse Meta of serious copyright infringement. According to the lawsuit filed in California federal court on Wednesday, Meta has used their literary works to develop artificial intelligence technology without permission. Internal Meta documents even show that the company has tried to hide its wrongdoing.

Meta has yet to respond to these serious allegations. The authors, including Ta-Nehisi Coates and Sarah Silverman, have decided to take the case to court in 2023. They claim that Meta misused their literary works to develop the large language model Llama without their consent.

Although Meta claims to have used copyrighted material legally, new evidence suggests that the company has been using the LibGen dataset, a repository of millions of stolen works, to train a large language model. In response to this information, the authors have formally asked the court to review the case and allow them to add new evidence to clarify the case.

According to internal documents, Mark Zuckerberg personally approved Meta's use of the LibGen dataset, despite warnings from the company's own AI team that the dataset contained many stolen works. The decision shows that Meta's CEO overrode copyright concerns in favor of the company's AI development goals.

Judge Chhabria had previously dismissed the authors' claims, finding that Meta's chatbot did not infringe copyright and did not violate copyright management information (CMI).

However, the authors maintained that the new evidence proved these violations and asked the court to reconsider the case. They even added a computer fraud charge to strengthen their argument.
