Apple, Microsoft and the Unexpected Reactions to AI Tool DeepSeek

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí03/02/2025

(Dan Tri) - In the context that DeepSeek is becoming a tool that causes many concerns for governments in many countries, Apple and Microsoft have made surprising moves towards this AI tool.

Microsoft suddenly changed its attitude, integrating DeepSeek into its products

Microsoft is one tech company that has had a dramatic change of heart about the rise of DeepSeek.

At the time DeepSeek first launched R1, a free and globally popular AI model, Microsoft and OpenAI, a close partner in AI development, criticized DeepSeek, claiming that the company illegally used OpenAI's data to train its AI model.

"Microsoft and OpenAI are investigating whether the startup DeepSeek is collecting data from OpenAI without permission. Microsoft security researchers discovered that OpenAI data was being accessed through its programming interfaces several months ago," a Microsoft spokesperson said.

However, just a week later, Microsoft suddenly announced the integration of DeepSeek into Azure AI, an artificial intelligence service that allows users and businesses to test and integrate AI models into their applications and services without having to build these models from scratch.

“One of the key advantages of bringing DeepSeek or any other AI model to Azure AI is that it allows developers to quickly experiment and integrate AI into their products and workflows,” said Asha Sharma, corporate vice president of AI platform at Microsoft.

“DeepSeek has undergone rigorous reviews by our cybersecurity team, including automated assessments of model behavior and comprehensive security assessments to mitigate potential risks,” added Asha Sharma.

DeepSeek's AI model is developed as open source, which makes it easy for Microsoft to integrate it into its Azure AI service.

Microsoft says that in the future, users will be able to use an optimized version of DeepSeek on Windows computers.

Microsoft's sudden change of heart and integration of DeepSeek into its services shows that Microsoft has recognized DeepSeek's potential and is eager to exploit it.

This is similar to how Microsoft invested early in OpenAI to quickly take the lead in the AI race before.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has "winged words" for DeepSeek

The emergence of DeepSeek has made the race to develop artificial intelligence (AI) between the US and China more intense, as for the first time an AI tool originating from China has attracted the attention of global users.

DeepSeek has emerged as a new player in the AI industry, challenging big American names like ChatGPT, Gemini, Llama… This has made many American technology companies worried.

However, Apple CEO Tim Cook viewed the emergence of DeepSeek in a positive light and had compliments for this AI tool.

Accordingly, at the event reporting financial results for the fourth quarter of 2024 last Saturday, a shareholder asked Tim Cook what he thought about DeepSeek, when this AI tool has development and operating costs many times lower than current US AI tools.

"In general, I think innovation that drives efficiency is a good thing. And that's what you see in the DeepSeek model," Tim Cook commented.

“From a capital expenditure perspective, we’ve always taken a very deliberate, cautious approach to our spending. So we continue to leverage models that we think will serve us well,” Cook added, hinting at the possibility of integrating DeepSeek tools into Apple products if it makes sense.

Previously, Apple partnered with OpenAI to integrate the AI tool ChatGPT into its products.

It is possible that if Apple finds that DeepSeek can operate effectively with low operating costs, it will also integrate this AI tool into its devices and services, just like what Microsoft is doing.
