Andy Carroll returned to England with the National League South sixth division club this summer, but his early days quickly turned into a disaster.
The 36-year-old missed the start of the season with a hamstring injury. When he returned, he came on as a substitute in the 5-2 defeat to Worthing last week, and was even handed a starting spot and captaincy in the FA Cup qualifier against Bedford.
However, that joy was short-lived. Before the end of the first half, Carroll was sent off after a high ball dispute, when his elbow hit his opponent's face too hard. The referee initially hesitated, but then did not hesitate to show a straight red card.
This situation made Carroll the focus of satire on social networks. Many fans sarcastically commented: "So he's missing three more matches", "Poor physical condition and unprofessional, what a great contract", or "Now Carroll can travel with his girlfriend, what a waste".
Dagenham & Redbridge were still leading 1-0 when Carroll left the pitch. But that advantage was short-lived, as Bedford equalised in injury time, forcing a replay on 17 September.
A forgettable start for the former Liverpool striker, who was expected to bring his Premier League experience to help his new club progress, but soon became a burden.
