Gyokeres cannot join Arsenal. |
Despite the two sides being close to agreeing a deal worth £55m plus £7.4m in add-ons, the deal has been stalled by small details around training fees and solidarity payments. Gyokeres, who has agreed a five-year contract, remains in Sweden and was unable to join up with the Gunners on the flight on 19 July.
Manager Mikel Arteta had hoped the blockbuster deal would be completed before Arsenal embarked on their pre-season tour, which will see them face AC Milan, Newcastle in Singapore and arch-rivals Tottenham in Hong Kong. If the deal is finalised in the coming days, Gyokeres could make his debut on August 6, when Arsenal host Villarreal in a friendly at home.
The 27-year-old Swede is at the peak of his career, having scored 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting, including 54 last season, winning two league titles and a Portuguese Cup with the Portuguese club since joining from Coventry for £20m in 2023.
The signing of Gyokeres is seen as the missing piece in Arteta’s plan to rebuild his attack, giving Arsenal more weight in the Premier League title race - a title they have waited 22 years for. Gyokeres himself has also expressed his desire to return to England to “take revenge” for his lackluster time at Brighton, where he did not have the opportunity to play in Europe’s most attractive tournament.
With his devastating form and natural goalscoring ability, Gyokeres promises to be a big hit if Arsenal complete the deal before the new season starts.
