Facing the risk of heavy rain due to the impact of storm No. 3, many localities in Nghe An are urgently salvaging water hyacinth from rivers and canals to promptly drain water and protect the safety of residential areas and summer-autumn rice.
In Van Tu commune, the Vu Giang river, which is the main drainage route for the area, has been covered by a thick layer of water hyacinth that stretches for kilometers, causing the flow to stagnate severely. In recent days, the locality has mobilized all machinery and equipment to salvage the water hyacinth.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Thuan - Chairman of Van Tu Commune People's Committee, Vu Giang River not only serves as a drainage channel for thousands of households but is also the main flood drainage route for more than 500 hectares of summer-autumn rice. However, due to favorable weather conditions, in a short time, water hyacinth has grown rapidly, covering more than 3 km of the flow, seriously hindering water drainage.
Faced with this situation, the commune mobilized large barges and installed excavators on the barges to carry out the work of salvaging duckweed. Due to the large volume of duckweed, the work was carried out continuously, coordinating with machines to both salvage and gather duckweed and push it to the end of the spillway before bringing it ashore and transporting it elsewhere. Up to now, the volume of duckweed salvaged has reached more than 60%, and it is expected to take 2 more days to complete, in time to respond to the heavy rain caused by storm No. 3.

Not only in Van Tu, in Quan Thanh commune, the situation is also very urgent. Trung Long canal - the place to drain water for over 400 hectares of rice and residential areas - is also covered by water hyacinth for over 1,000 m.
Ms. Dang Thi Dung - Chairman of Quan Thanh Commune People's Committee said that since July 19, the locality has mobilized hundreds of workers and machines to participate in the salvage. Currently, the progress has reached over 50%, and it is expected that by the end of July 21, the drainage will be completed in time if storm No. 3 causes heavy rain. This time, the commune continues to dredge more canals covered with duckweed to ensure comprehensive drainage, such as Dong Chang canal from Bac Thanh bridge to Hoa Tham hamlet, Nam Long drainage canal from Bay Cua Dao river to Hoa Tham hamlet.

In addition, at key drainage culverts such as Bara Nghi Quang, Dien Thanh drainage culvert, and Dien Thuy culvert, water hyacinth is being urgently salvaged to clear the flow and reduce the risk of flooding when storms occur.
