After competing and finishing last in Group A on July 17, Vietnamese tennis faces the risk of being relegated from Group III of the Davis Cup and having to compete in a relegation play-off.
Closing the match series on the night of July 19, the Vietnam Davis Cup team retained their position with a score of 2-1 against Sri Lanka. The successful retention of the position helped the Vietnam Davis Cup players receive a bonus of 230 million VND. Although this achievement was considered a failure in previous years, this year's rejuvenation is considered a success.
In the first singles match of the relegation match on the evening of July 19, Pham La Hoang Anh won an important 2-0 (6-3, 7-5) victory over Ashen Silva, which was also his first win in the tournament. However, in the second singles match, Vu Ha Minh Duc had a difficult time against Harshana Godamanna and lost 3-6, 2-6, making the score 1-1.
Hopes were pinned on the decisive doubles match between Dinh Viet Tuan Minh and Nguyen Van Phuong. The Vietnamese duo started impressively, winning the first set 6-2 quickly. In the second set, Sri Lanka rose strongly, forcing the match into a tie-break and winning 7-6.
The deciding set witnessed the persistence and determination of Van Phuong and Tuan Minh. After powerful serves and key game breaks, the Vietnamese pair won 6-2, ending the match with a final score of 2-1.
This victory helps Vietnamese tennis avoid the risk of falling to group IV, while continuing to nurture hopes of promotion in the next season.
