The 2025 AFF Women's Championship will take place from August 6 to August 19 in Hai Phong (Group A) and Phu Tho (Group B). The eight women's teams in the region will be divided into two groups, playing a round-robin tournament. The top two teams in each group will advance to the semi-finals.
In Group A, the Vietnamese women's team will face Cambodia (6.8), Indonesia (9.8) and Thailand (12.8). Except for Thailand, who are considered to be on par, the other two teams are unlikely to be able to stop Huynh Nhu and her teammates from advancing to the semi-finals.
The goal of coach Mai Duc Chung and his team will of course be the championship. However, the coach born in 1951 is still cautious and requires his students to stay focused in every match. "The Vietnamese women's team respects all opponents in this year's tournament. We have studied the women of Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia and they are all making very positive changes."
"I ask my players to try their best in every match. We also hope that Vietnamese football fans will cheer for us in this tournament," the veteran strategist of Vietnamese football shared at a press conference before the opening match with U23 Cambodia.
In addition to aiming for the championship, the Southeast Asian Women's Football Championship is also considered an important preparation step for the Vietnamese women's team for the 33rd SEA Games at the end of the year and the Asian Women's Football Championship taking place in March next year. Therefore, with careful preparation and high spirits, Huynh Nhu and her teammates are eager to step onto the field.
Historically, the Vietnamese women's team has won the title three times in 2006, 2012, 2019 and finished second three times (2004, 2008, 2016). The team currently holding the most successful position is Thailand's women's team with four titles (2011, 2015, 2016, 2018).
In Group A, perhaps the Vietnamese and Thai women will win tickets to the next round because their strength is completely superior to the other two opponents. The confrontation between the two sides on the evening of August 12 may only have the meaning of determining the first and second place in the group.
In Group B, the Philippines and Myanmar women are also highly rated. However, the presence of the Australian U23 women promises to make the competition for the two tickets to the next round more unpredictable. The chance of Timor Leste women creating a surprise is really low.
