Paul Pogba and Ansu Fati, two famous new recruits who joined AS Monaco this summer, have yet to leave any mark on the pitch as they continued to be absent from the squad for the friendly match against Nottingham Forest last Saturday.
Pogba, the former Manchester United and Juventus midfielder, and Fati, the former Barcelona star, both arrived at Monaco with high expectations. However, coach Adi Hutter said the pair were still struggling to reach their best form after a long period without regular playing time.
"I understand the expectations from the fans, but they need more time," Hutter said at a press conference. "We don't want to risk pushing them when they're not ready. Everything will happen step by step," the Monaco coach said.
Pogba's case in particular has attracted the most attention, as he has just completed an 18-month ban for doping violations. The player who won the 2018 World Cup with the French team is on a journey to regain his peak form and sees Monaco as a chance to rebuild his career. Monaco also hopes that Pogba's experience will help them compete in the Champions League next season.
Monaco still have two pre-season friendlies to play – against Arminia Bielefeld on July 26 and Ajax on August 3 – before they officially enter Ligue 1 with their opening game against Le Havre on August 17. These could be the last chances for Pogba and Fati to show their worth before the season starts.
