On the evening of July 19, medical staff at the scene said that at around 6 p.m., rescue units had pulled a 10-year-old boy from the sunken ship in a stable but mentally disturbed condition. The boy was later identified as Hoang Nhat M. (born in 2015), residing in Hoang Mai ward, Hanoi.
M. said that at the time of the incident, he was traveling with his family. When the ship capsized, he was lucky to get into an airlock, where he tried to stay calm and waited for rescuers to arrive. After being trapped for a while, he found a way to escape and was fortunately discovered by authorities and brought safely onto a rescue ship.
A representative of the medical team at the scene said that after being brought onto the ship, the child was warmed up, given initial first aid, and then transferred to Bai Chay Hospital for further monitoring and health care. The child’s condition is currently stable, but the whereabouts of his parents have not yet been determined.
"The moment happened so quickly, I didn't feel anything. I tried to escape, a moment later the soldiers rescued me," said M.
Salvaging the ship encountered many difficulties.
On the evening of July 19, Quang Ninh Provincial Police said that functional forces were urgently deploying rescue work after a tourist boat capsized that occurred that afternoon in the waters of Ha Long Bay.
According to initial information, the cruise ship Green Bay 58, registration number QN-7105, departed from Ha Long International Passenger Port to visit Route No. 2.
There were 53 people on board, including 48 passengers (41 adults, 7 children - all Vietnamese) and 5 crew members. While the ship was returning to port, reaching the area between Hon Ga Choi and Hon Co Don, it suddenly encountered a strong storm that caused the ship to capsize.
At 21:30, Rescuers found 34 bodies and saved 10 lives.
Immediately after receiving the information, Quang Ninh Provincial Police directed the Fire Prevention, Fire Fighting and Rescue Police, Traffic Police and other functional units to quickly arrive at the scene to organize rescue and search for the victims.
The owner of the vehicle and also the captain of the ship Vinh Xanh 58 was identified as Mr. D.VT, residing in Ha An ward, Quang Ninh.
Mr. Nguyen Van Cong, Vice Chairman of Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee, said that the province has mobilized maximum forces, including border guards, coast guard, fisheries surveillance and specialized ships to serve the rescue work.
“Currently, the water level is low, making it easier to approach the area where the ship was in distress. However, the salvage process needs to be carefully calculated to ensure the safety of the participating forces,” said Mr. Cong.
In addition, many rescue plans are being deployed in parallel, including mobilizing professional divers to check inside the ship's hull, because the area is suspected to still have people trapped.
Mr. Tran Huy Lieu, a member of the rescue team, shared: “Approaching and salvaging the ship encountered many difficulties due to the complex terrain under the sea. Our top priority is to save people. The salvage process may have to last until tonight or tomorrow morning to ensure safety and efficiency.”
Up to now, the rescue team is still working hard every minute and every hour, with the highest determination to search for the remaining missing people. The rescue work is still maintained at an urgent level, with the fierce participation of local authorities and related agencies.
