According to data from the National Electricity System and Market Operator (NSMO), the national electricity system load recorded a new record on July 18 with the maximum capacity of the Northern electricity system reaching 26,998 MW, an increase of 1,458 MW, equivalent to an increase of 5.7% over the same period in 2024.
Along with that, the national electricity consumption output also set a new record, reaching 1,066.6 million kWh, an increase of 41.3 million kWh (equivalent to 4%) compared to the peak day of the same period last year.
Of which, the Northern region accounts for more than half, with consumption reaching 551.8 million kWh, an increase of 22.2 million kWh, equivalent to 4.2% compared to 2024.
The main reason for the sudden high electricity consumption is the sharp increase in demand for cooling equipment such as air conditioners and electric fans in the context of outdoor temperatures in many areas regularly exceeding 38-40 degrees Celsius.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade , maintaining the operation of the power system at high load levels for a long time poses a great challenge for system dispatch, safe operation of the power grid, as well as the risk of overload and local incidents in densely populated areas.
Faced with this situation, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, NSMO and the electricity industry recommend that people and businesses need to raise awareness of using electricity safely, economically and effectively.
Specifically, people should limit the simultaneous use of many high-capacity electrical devices during peak hours (from 11:30 to 15:00 and from 20:00 to 23:00); adjust the air conditioner temperature to a reasonable level (from 26 degrees Celsius or higher, combined with the use of fans) to both ensure health and avoid system overload.
Customers should prioritize using electrical equipment with energy-saving labels, turn off unnecessary equipment, unplug when not in use, and limit the simultaneous use of many high-power devices during peak hours. Research and install self-consumption rooftop solar power systems.
In addition, authorities also emphasized that safe use of electricity to prevent fire and explosion is extremely important, especially in prolonged hot and dry weather conditions.
People need to check and maintain the electrical system in their home periodically; do not plug too many electrical devices into the same outlet; do not let electrical devices operate continuously for long periods of time without supervision.
Installation of anti-leakage and anti-overload devices is also recommended to limit the risk of fire from household electrical systems.
