“Promoting the qualities of Uncle Ho’s soldiers, Mr. Tri has overcome difficulties to develop the family economy and raise his children to become useful citizens for society. Besides, he always actively participates in local and association movements and activities. He is one of the typical examples of good economic performance, rising out of poverty and becoming rich legitimately for other veterans to learn and follow,” commented Phan Van Hoi, Chairman of the Association of War Veterans of Trieu Ai Commune, when taking us to visit the economic model of his members.

Appearing before our eyes is a spacious, solid house with a lush, fruitful garden. This is the result of many years of hard work by Mr. Tri and his wife. Coming from a poor farming family and trained through the military, he always had the will and determination to rise up to make life less difficult. In 1982, after returning from military service with empty hands, he started a business with his family's traditional profession of growing rice.

However, after a few years of economic efficiency not being as expected, Mr. Tri researched and switched to other crops. “After researching, I found that pepper is a suitable plant to grow in hilly areas. With the little capital I had, I cut down trees to plant pillars and invested in planting about 3 sao of pepper. Thanks to the income from pepper, my wife and I later had more funds to expand the cultivation in our garden,” Mr. Tri confided.

To achieve high efficiency in production, he actively learned from the mass media and some households in and outside the commune continued to convert crops. Spending a lot of sweat and effort, up to now, his family has 2 hectares of cajuput forest, in the garden area, in addition to pepper, he also planted a variety of trees such as: 100 dragon fruit trees; 4.5 sao of wild sim; 70 lemon trees; pineapple mixed with vegetables, short-term crops according to the motto "take short to support long" to increase income.

According to Mr. Tri, farming today requires science, understanding of the soil and the characteristics of each type of crop. Therefore, from the beginning, he classified the crops into separate areas, with wide paths in the middle for convenient care, fertilization, and harvesting. Thanks to good care and proper technical processes, his family's garden has high yields, delicious product quality, and is favored by local people.

Introducing us to his family's 4.5 sao of wild sim, he shared: wild sim is a shrub, loves light, can withstand harsh weather conditions, and can grow even on barren land. After planting, his family mainly focuses on weeding and fertilizing so the tree grows quickly and bears fruit. Sim flowers around April - May and ripens around July, the harvest period lasts for 3 months.

Mr. Tri said: “In the last sim crop, my family sold the finished product to the market for about 40,000 VND/sim. Wild sim does not require much care and produces a lot of fruit. Sim fruit can be used to make a variety of products such as sim wine, sim jam, sim syrup, sim soft drinks, so the economic efficiency is relatively high.”

In addition to farming, he and his wife used to raise a large number of chickens, geese, buffaloes, and cows. Thanks to that, Mr. Tri had more conditions to take care of his children's education. In recent years, his health has not been as good as before, so he and his wife have focused on developing their garden. On average, each year, this economic model brings Mr. Tri's family an income of about 220 million VND.

Not only is he good at economics, he is also a sociable and approachable person, always ready to help with capital and share production experiences with people, especially the disadvantaged members of the Veterans Association in the area. With his dynamism in economic development and enrichment, and his enthusiasm in social movements, Mr. Tri has been recognized and rewarded many times by the locality and the Veterans Association at all levels.

“When I was young, I devoted my mind and strength to repelling the enemy; developing the family economy, and raising my children. Now that I am older, I take up farming and tending to my garden as my hobby. I wish for nothing more than good health, because as long as I am healthy, I can contribute to building my homeland,” said Mr. Tri.
